A LESSON FROM ST. PATRICK

Dearly Beloved, A LESSON FROM ST. PATRICK “Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God's wrath, for it is written: ‘It is mine to avenge; I will repay,’ says the Lord. On the contrary: ‘If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.’ Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good” (Romans 12:19-21 NIV). March 17 is set aside on the island of Ireland and in many other parts of the world to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. St. Patrick of Ireland, born in Roman Britain, was captured by Irish pirates during a raiding party when he was around fourteen years old. He was a slave tending sheep in Ireland until he was twenty when he was able to escape. He later became a priest and was sent to evangelize Ireland, where he was able to do many marvellous things and convert many people to Christianity. In fact, he is considered to be the one who brought Christianity to Ireland. He died at Saul, where he had built the first Irish church. He is believed to be buried in Down Cathedral, Downpatrick, Northern Ireland. Someone has written this about him: “Patrick was a humble, pious, gentle man, whose love and total devotion to and trust in God should be a shining example to each of us. So complete was his trust in God, and of the importance of his mission, he feared nothing - not even death.” However, an essential lesson from the life of this great man of God is his love for his enemies, who made him a slave and treated him cruelly for almost seven years before he could escape. Although he was supposedly moved by a dream to go back to Ireland and preach the Gospel there, he could have, out of hatred, refused to go to Ireland and instead gone elsewhere to work for God. He did not repay the Irish people for the evil they had done him. Rather, he overcame their evil with good by going back to the place to become a channel of God’s blessings to that generation. Today, he is being celebrated not only by the Irish people, who used to be his enemies, but by people throughout the world. It is unfortunate that many people today do not want to be of help to their perceived enemies. They would rather wish those enemies death or ill luck. Some even waste their precious prayer times in praying against their enemies while Jesus Christ teaches that we should love and pray FOR our enemies (see Matthew 5:44; Luke 6:27-36). He demonstrated this on the cross (see Luke 23:34) and Stephen followed His example (Acts 7:60). Who are your perceived enemies? Are you ready to help them if you have the opportunity? Or, are you in the habit of praying against your enemies? Love your perceived enemies and do good unto them. The Lord will reward you greatly for this. In His service, Bayo Afolaranmi (Pastor). Prayer Point: Pray that you will always pray for your perceived enemies and even help them if you have the opportunity.

"IS IT TOO LATE?"

Dearly Beloved, "IS IT TOO LATE?" "The children born during your bereavement will yet say in your hearing, 'This place is too small for us; give us more space to live in.' Then you will say in your heart, 'Who bore me these? I was bereaved and barren; I was exiled and rejected. Who brought these up? I was left all alone, but these--where have they come from?'" (Isaiah 49:20-21 NIV). I was with my father in his farmhouse some years ago when he told me his life story. It was the early part of his marriage with my mother. They had lost their first three sons in succession. All his contemporaries were successfully having children. It seemed that there was no hope of having another child. As he was in that same farmhouse one afternoon pondering about his dilemma, he heard a voice saying: "IS IT TOO LATE?" He did not know the source of the voice, but he believed that it came from God and that it was actually not too late for him and his young wife to have children that would live. That was over fifty years ago. The Lord blessed my parents with five sons, three daughters, and eight other grandchildren before they died about ten years ago! It was indeed not too late for my father to be a biological father and even a grandfather. My parents wondered if they could have such a large number of living children. I remembered this situation as I was reading the above Bible passage recently. Hannah was in a similar situation. The Bible introduced her as a sad, childless woman (1 Samuel 1:2-7). However, God changed her story. She later had three sons and two daughters after giving birth to that great man of God, Samuel (1 Samuel 2:21). What is your situation? Do you also have a similar problem? It may not be childlessness. It may be any other seemingly hopeless situation. Let me reaffirm that IT IS NOT TOO LATE! The Lord is not done with you yet. He will arise in His appointed time and manifest His power in your life. Remember the words of the Psalmist, "When the LORD brought back the captives to Zion, we were like men who dreamed. Our mouths were filled with laughter, our tongues with songs of joy. Then it was said among the nations, 'The LORD has done great things for them.' The LORD has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy" (Psalm 126:1-3 NIV. Read also Jeremiah 31:16-17). In His service, Bayo Afolaranmi (Pastor) Prayer Point: Lord, arise in Your appointed time and manifest Your power in my life in Jesus’ name. Amen.

LORD, TEACH US TO PRAY!

Dear Beloved, LORD, TEACH US TO PRAY! "One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, 'Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples'" (Luke 11:1 NIV). Our Lord Jesus Christ, while on earth, knew the importance of prayer, and He did not play with it. He started His earthly ministry with prayer and ended it with prayer. One of the instances of His prayer life is the verse quoted above. As He finished His prayer, one of His disciples came to Him and asked Him to teach them (that is, the disciples) how to pray. This indicates that they had been seeing Him pray, and probably they had partaken in His time of prayer, but they did not know how to pray. The Bible does not disclose the identity of this particular disciple. However, one of them asked, and it led to the teaching of what we know today as "The Lord's Prayer." The prayer life of a Christian cannot be overemphasized. It is proper for us to meditate beforehand on what we are to ask of God, and to arrange our thoughts, so that we may not come thoughtlessly into His presence. As Christians, we are on the war front against the devil and his host. The Bible clearly states that our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the satanic powers (Ephesians 6: 12), and that though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. We can use the efficacy of prayer against these satanic powers. How can we use this power effectively? Promises of God abound in the Bible that we should ask Him anything in prayer and He will do it for us. How can we rightly utilize these promises in prayer? We have to ask God to teach us how to pray. There are various ways of prayer. The true method of praying can be learned only by our being properly taught. Indeed, we cannot pray acceptably unless God takes us through the course of prayer. Somebody has suggested the acronym "ACTS" to describe the ways of prayer. The acronym stands for Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, and Supplication. While praying, what method should we use? We need to ask God to teach us. In His service, Bayo Afolaranmi (Pastor). Prayer Point: Pray that the Lord will teach you the right way to pray to Him.
