Spiritual Digest for the Day 26Dec2021

BIBLE VERSE FOR THE DAY “...the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. And having come in, the angel said to her, ‘Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women!’” (Luke 1:26-28 NKJV). *********** QUOTE FOR THE DAY God is ready to highly favor and bless you. Be ready to be of good use to Him as we are about to enter another year. Make yourself available to Him. CAN GOD USE YOU?

Dearly Beloved, CAN GOD USE YOU? “...the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. And having come in, the angel said to her, ‘Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women!’” (Luke 1:26-28 NKJV). The Christmas season for the year has come and gone. Regardless of the debate of some people that Christmas is not “Christian,” let me draw out a lesson from one of the personalities of the biblical stories related to the season. The Virgin Mary was the second most important personality in the Nativity stories. God specially used her to be the vessel of the delivery of the Baby Jesus. The virgin birth of the Messiah had been prophesied hundreds of years before it actually happened (see Isaiah 7:14). There were many virgins in Israel during the time of Mary. She was highly favoured to be the mother of the Savior. However, some qualities in her distinguished her from all virgins and women of her time. She was pious. She was virtuous. She was humble. She was faithful. She was not doubtful. She was ready to be an instrument in the hands of God, even when it seemed that such readiness would bring possible rejection from her fiancĂ© and disgrace from the society. No wonder, she was highly favored and blessed (see Luke 1:28, 48). God is still looking for people that He will use for His plans and purposes today. Can He find you useful for His service? Are you pious? Are you humble? Are you faithful? Are you not doubtful? Are you ready to be an instrument in His hands regardless of the seeming bad consequences this may bring you in the world? God is ready to highly favored and blessed you. Be ready to be of good use to Him as we are about to enter another year. Make yourself available to Him. You will not regret doing so. In His service, Bayo Afolaranmi (Pastor). Prayer Point: Pray that you will be available for God's good use as you are about to enter another year.

WHAT DOES THE CHRISTMAS MEAN TO YOU?

Dearly Beloved, WHAT DOES THE CHRISTMAS MEAN TO YOU? “And [Mary] will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21 NKJV). One of the most celebrated seasons in the year is the Christmas season. The season is here again. Many people, especially the children, have been caught the “fever” of the season. There has been this controversy about the origin of season. Many are of the opinion that it originated from a pagan festival. This has made some Christian denominations and sects to distance themselves from the season. Other people would argue that there is no such celebration in the Bible. Many people believe that the Christmas day is the birthday of Jesus Christ, although, this has been disproved from many evidences. However, what does the Christmas mean to you? Christmas is just a festive season to some people. Therefore, such people are ready to celebrate it just as they celebrate any other festive period. They see the season as a time to entertain themselves. Among such people are the ones that believe in taking their children to visit Father Christmas who will entertain the children and gives them gifts for a token. Christmas season is a period that some people feel they can make quick profit in their business or enterprise. Therefore, they inflate the cost of their wares and services. Most people, especially Christians, attach the season to the first coming of Jesus Christ into this world. However, some people are indifferent. To them, Christmas season or even the Christmas Day is like any other season or day. However, one has to consider the popular opinion about Christmas – the birth of Jesus Christ. Why did He “made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness” (Philippians 2:7 NIV) by coming to this wretched world? The main reason is to save people from their sins (Matthew 1:21; John 1:29; Acts 13:38-39; 1 John 3:5; Revelation 1:5-6) so “that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16 NIV). This singular act entails many other things that give Christmas different meanings to different people. Regardless of any other meaning attached to the Christmas or any controversy about it, the paramount thing is that Jesus Christ came to this world in a time in history for the salvation of humankind. Have you been saved by Him? What does the Christmas season mean to you? In His service, Bayo Afolaranmi (Pastor). Prayer Point: Pray that the real meaning of Christmas will not elude you this Christmas season.

WHY CHRISTMAS?

Dear Beloved, WHY CHRISTMAS? “And [Mary] will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins" (Matthew 1:21 NKJV). The Christmas season is here. It is the most popular and most festive of all seasons. Companies and other institutions celebrate the season in a grand style. Kids always long for the season because of its merriment, especially the visit to “Santa Claus” – who gives them gifts. Many people send greeting cards and gifts to their loved ones. Nevertheless, why Christmas? Why celebrate it? Christmas commemorates the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ in a manger in Bethlehem some two thousand years ago. What made Jesus who is in very nature God became like us? What made Him appear like an ordinary person? The Bible unveils at least eight reasons. Jesus Christ came to the world for many reasons. One, He came to save people from their sins (Matthew 1:21; John 1:29). Two, He came to call sinners to repentance (Matthew 9:12, 13; Mark 2:17; Luke 5:32; 1 Timothy 1:15) and save the lost (Matthew 18:11; Luke 9:55; 19:10; John 3:17). Three, why some people thought that He came to abolish the Old Testament laws, He actually came to fulfill them (Matthew 5:17). Four, His coming to the world physically is to set people free from the darkness (John 12:46). Five, He came to preach the gospel (Mark 1:38) and bear witness to the truth (John 18:37). Lastly, He came to the world to do the will of God (John 6:38). From the above points, Jesus Christ came to restore us to God. What about you? Have you come to God? Have you accepted Him as your personal Savior and Lord? Celebrating Christmas is meaningless if you have not accepted Jesus Christ into your life. The purpose of Christmas is the eternal salvation of you and me. Let this historic season fulfill that purpose in your life. In His service, Bayo Afolaranmi (Pastor). Prayer Point: Pray that the purpose of the first coming of Jesus Christ to the world will be fulfilled in your life.

BIBLE VERSE FOR THE DAY “Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, saying, 'Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him’” (Matthew 2:1-2 NKJV). *********** QUOTE FOR THE DAY Any celebration or activity during this Christmas season that does not give glory to Jesus Christ is not pleasing to God. He wants us to use the season to worship Him. - Bayo Afolaranmi ************ PRAYER/ACTION FOR THE DAY Pray that your activities during this Christmas season will indeed give glory to Jesus Christ.

O COME ALL YE FAITHFUL

Dearly Beloved, O COME ALL YE FAITHFUL “Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, saying, 'Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him’” (Matthew 2:1-2 NKJV). The Christmas season is here again! It was like yesterday that we celebrated the last one last year. Thanks be to God for sparing our lives to witness another season. While some people are indifferent to the season and its cause, many people would have started planning on how to utilize the season to their advantage. Unfortunately, most of these people will still commit the error of leaving the Reason for the season, Jesus Christ, out of the season. The season is to be used to commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ by adoring Him in all way we can. The Magi from the east came to Jerusalem to worship the new born King. The concept of adoration of Jesus Christ the Lord during Christmas season, and even all seasons, might have prompted the writer of one of popular Christmas hymns, “O COME ALL YE FAITHFUL” (Adeste Fideles) who many people believed to be John Francis Wade (c. 1710-1786) to invite people to come and adore the Christ the Lord. Wade summoned all the faithful to come joyfully and triumphantly to behold the King of angels and adore Him. Wade used the hymn to describe who this new born King is: “True God of true God, Light from Light Eternal... Son of the Father, begotten, not created.” As the shepherds and the Magi came to adore the new born King, we also ought to come and adore Him. We should give all glory to Him now and forever. Amen. Any celebration or activity during this Christmas season that does not give glory to Jesus Christ is not pleasing to God. He wants us to use the season to worship Him. “O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord.” In His service, Bayo Afolaranmi (Pastor). Prayer Point: Pray that your activities during this Christmas season will indeed give glory to Jesus Christ.

GRACE! 'TIS A CHARMING SOUND

Dearly Beloved, GRACE! 'TIS A CHARMING SOUND “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast…. But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ’s gift” (Ephesians 2:8-9; 4:7 NKJV). One of the hymns I cherished when I was growing up in the village was the hymn GRACE! 'TIS A CHARMING SOUND. I could sing almost all of its lyrics in Yoruba offhand. It is indeed a charming song for me to date. Philip Doddridge (1702-1751) and Augustus Montague Toplady (1740-1778) composed verses of this hymn, though some historians attributed the hymn to only Doddridge. The hymn has been set to several melodies but that of Ira D. Sankey is likely the most popular one. The importance of the saving grace of God is emphasized in the hymn. Grace is a charming sound because it is by grace that we have been saved (Ephesians 2:8-9). Grace is harmonious to our ears because God has given grace to each of His children (Ephesians 4:7). All the earth needs to hear this grace because the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared for all man (Titus 2:11). Grace is indeed vital to people’s salvation because it was God’s grace that first forced a way to save rebellious man through the coming of Jesus Christ (Matthew 1:21). This grace displayed all the steps that enable people to have remission of sins (Acts 2:36-38). It is grace that drew the amazing plan for people’s redemption that God purposed in Jesus Christ (Ephesians 3:10-11). Grace is the medium of provision for spiritual needs (Philippians 4:19). This grace makes possible an eternal home in heaven. The grace of God has written the names of as many that have been redeemed by the blood of Christ in the book of life (Revelation 21:11-15). The grace of God also makes it possible for people to approach God and keep them in His favour. The last stanza of the hymn is a prayer that the grace may inspire “my soul with strength divine” so that one may aspire to be with God in all one’s days. As the refrain reflects, we are saved by grace alone! This is made possible by the death of Jesus Christ for mankind. Have you been saved by this charming grace? Only those that have been saved and justified by God’s grace upon their obedience to the gospel can certainly say with conviction, “Grace! ‘Tis A Charming Sound”! Invite Jesus Christ into your life (if you have not done so), and you will enjoy the charming grace He brings. In His service, Bayo Afolaranmi (Pastor). Prayer Point: Pray that you will not miss the charming grace of Jesus Christ both here on earth and in heaven.

BLESS THE LORD, O MY SOUL! (Part 2)

Dearly Beloved, BLESS THE LORD, O MY SOUL! (Part 2) "Bless the LORD, O my soul; And all that is within me, bless His holy name! Bless the LORD, O my soul, And forget not all His benefits?" (Psalm 103:1-2 NKJV). This is the continuation of the study on Psalms 103 and 104 started last week. We examined who God is especially in His greatness manifested in His creation which made the psalmist to exclaim to his soul to bless or praise the Lord. In this second part of the study, we will examine what God has done, is doing, and will still do for us that make Him deserve our worship, praises and thanksgiving. The psalmist urged his soul not to forget all the benefits of God. What are these benefits? He enumerated them in this Psalm 103: the Lord forgives all his sins (verse 3a); the Lord heals all his diseases (verse 3b); the Lord redeems his life from destruction (verse 4a); the Lord crowns him with love and compassion (verses 4b, 8, 11, 13, 17); and the Lord satisfies his desires with good things (verse 5). The psalmist declared that the Lord did all those things to his soul, hence, the exclamation to his soul to bless the Lord. He went further to declare other things that the Lord has done and is doing to him as well as other people: the Lord is just to the oppressed (verse 6); the Lord led the Israelites out of slavery through Moses (verse 7); the Lord is gracious and slow to anger (verses 8-10); and in His compassion and love, He treats us like children (verses 10-14). Having declared the goodness (or benefits) of God, the psalmist entreated the angels and all the heavenly hosts to join him in blessing the Lord. He even entreated you and me, His works, to also bless the Lord. Undoubtedly, you also will have many things to praise the Lord for. Think of those things. Do not forget all His benefits. Recount them and praise the Lord. Bless the LORD, O my soul! In His service, Bayo Afolaranmi (Pastor). Prayer Point: Pray that your soul and all that is within you will always praise and bless God for everything He is doing in your life.

BLESS THE LORD, O MY SOUL!

Dearly Beloved, BLESS THE LORD, O MY SOUL! "Bless the LORD, O my soul! O LORD my God, You are very great: You are clothed with honor and majesty?" (Psalm 104:1 NKJV). The book of Psalms is full of praises of, and prayers to God. Psalms 103 and 104 are distinct out of the other psalms because of their description of who God is and what He is doing to us that make Him deserve our worship, adoration, praises and thanksgiving. Let us examine first who God is in Psalm 104 before coming back to Psalm 103 to discover what He is doing for us that made the psalmist told his soul "and all that is within" him to bless or praise the Lord. The psalmist started with the greatness of God. The greatness of God is manifested in His creation: He stretches out the heavens like a tent (verse 2b); He sets the earth on its unmovable foundations (verse 5) and covers it with the deep (verse 6a); He sets the course of water (verses 6b-9); He satisfies the earth and other creatures by His work (verses 10-13); He makes the earth produce food for the animals and even man (verses 14-15); He provides dwelling place for His creatures (verses 16-18); and He marks off seasons, days and years by the sun and the moon (verses 19-23). The psalmist continues to describe how God made His creation in wisdom, and all these creatures look unto God for sustenance (verses 24-29). Having considered all these things, the psalmist concludes that the glory of God will endure for ever and that he would respond to God's greatness by singing to Him all his life and that he would find pleasure in meditating about it. The implication of this psalm is that we should always praise God for who He is as He has demonstrated it in His creation. Bless the LORD, O my soul! In His service, Bayo Afolaranmi (Pastor). Prayer Point: Pray that your soul and all that is within you will always praise and bless God for who He is in your life. NB Next week, we will consider the other aspect of why our soul should bless the Lord. Till then, God bless you!

ARE YOU STILL IN THE FAITH?

Dearly Beloved, ARE YOU STILL IN THE FAITH? “And [Delilah] said, ‘The Philistines are upon you, Samson!’ So [Samson] awoke from his sleep, and said, ‘I will go out as before, at other times, and shake myself free!’ But he did not know that the Lord had departed from him. Then the Philistines took him and put out his eyes..." (Judges 16:20-21a NKJV). As my wife switched off the electric fan in our bedroom, I noticed as the fan continued to rotate at a slower speed till it came to standstill after about two minutes. The spiritual life of many Christians is like that electric fan that is just being switched off or disconnected from its power source. Many Christians that used to be fervent in the Spirit and in the things of God like prayer, reading and meditating on the words of God, worshipping God, fellowshipping with other believers, evangelizing the world about Jesus Christ, and the likes find themselves dwindling in such spiritual things. They may think that they are still in the Lord and fervent in the things of God, but the reserve is the case. The main causes of this degeneration mostly are sin and carelessness. No wonder, Apostle Paul admonished, “Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall [into sin]” (1 Corinthians 10:12 NKJV). The life of Samson is a good example here. Samson was a mighty man who did great exploits for the Lord by delivering the Israelites from the Philistines (see Judges 14-16). There is even a record that “…he tore the lion apart as one would have torn apart a young goat..." (Judges 14:6 NKJV). However, he dabbled into sin and carelessness by unequally associating himself with a Philistine woman - Delilah, and he paid dearly for it. He thought he was still in the Lord and as powerful as before. Nonetheless, the enemies came and conquered him (see Judges 16). As Apostle Paul again admonished, “Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves” (2 Corinthians 13:5 NKJV), are you still in the faith? Are you as fervent in the Lord as when you first believed? Is the Lord still with you, or rather, are you still with the Lord? Take heed, lest you become a disconnected fan! In His service, Bayo Afolaranmi (Pastor). Prayer Point: Pray that you will always examine yourself to make sure you are still in the faith.

IT IS NOT ORDINARY!

Dearly Beloved, IT IS NOT ORDINARY! “I lay down and slept; I awoke, for the Lord sustained me” (Psalm 3:5 NKJV). Every morning, my alarm clock would ring by 4.00 am and I would wake up and start my daily routine. At times, I would have woken up before the sound of the alarm. This has been happening for years, and I tend to think that it is ordinary or normal to wake up early in the morning either by the sound of the alarm or before its rings. However, it recently dawned on me that it is really not ordinary to sleep and wake up; it is a divine arrangement and grace. If you do not agree with this, place an alarm beside a dead man and see if he would wake up when the alarm rings. It is not ordinary or normal to sleep and wake up. Only God makes one do so every day. The psalmist realized this and declared, “I lay down and slept; I awoke, for the Lord sustained me” (Psalm 3:5 NKJV). “I will both lie down in peace, and sleep; For You alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety” (Psalm 4:8 NKJV). “It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows; for so He gives His beloved sleep” (Psalm 127:2 NKJV). Sleeping and waking up are not the only things that we consider normal or ordinary. Breathing, eating, drinking, talking, hearing, walking, lifting of hands, and any other part of our body, in fact, everything that one can think of as ordinary or normal is not really ordinary and normal. It is God in His infinite mercy that has arranged them and allows us to be enjoying them. As part of His covenant with Noah after the flood, God said, “While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, winter and summer, and day and night shall not cease” (Genesis 8:22 NKJV). He continues to keep that covenant! The implication of this is that we ought to always praise God for the gift of life every day and the ability to do what we are able to do each day. Thank You, Lord, for everything. It is not ordinary! In His service, Bayo Afolaranmi (Pastor). Prayer Point: Lord, help me not to take the seemingly ordinary things of life for granted, but to always appreciate you for all these things.

BIBLE VERSE FOR THE DAY “Do not fret because of evildoers, nor be envious of the workers of iniquity. For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither as the green herb” (Psalm 37:1-2 NKJV). *********** QUOTE FOR THE DAY Do not fret because of evildoers, and do not be weary in striving for justice and righteousness. You will get your reward in spite of what the world may say or do against you. - Bayo Afolaranmi ************ PRAYER/ACTION FOR THE DAY Pray for the grace to always stand for justice and righteousness in spite of what it might cost you.

DO NOT BE WEARY IN STRIVING FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS

Dearly Beloved, DO NOT BE WEARY IN STRIVING FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS “Do not fret because of evildoers, nor be envious of the workers of iniquity. For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither as the green herb” (Psalm 37:1-2 NKJV). Let me start this message with a word of appreciation to God for not allowing the heartless ones to turn me into a one-eyed person. I was about to cross the road in front of my office when one “Okada” (commercial motorcycle) rider almost ran over me because he was riding against the traffic. Another rider followed him. As I was trying to caution the second one of the illegality of what they are doing and the danger such action portends, he on motion gave me a blow directly on my right eye. The hit made me fall down, and passersby had to rush to me to lift me up and sympathize with me. The Okada man did not stop to see the havoc he has caused to my eye. Anyway, I thank God that the damage was not much. As I left the clinic of my office where I went for immediate treatment, I was thinking within me if I have done anything wrong to warrant such ill-treatment. Is it wrong to correct what is wrong in the society? Why would people be so heartless to the point of maltreating others especially when others are trying to correct them? Why would evildoers continue to thrive in the society and the ones that attempt to make things right always suffer for it? Many other questions kept coming to my mind especially about the increasing atrocities of the evildoers in Nigeria in spite of the high religiosity in the country. Prophet Jeremiah suffered greatly in the hands of evildoers in his days. Even kings persecuted him and wanted to kill him for saying the truth (see Jeremiah 11:18-23; 20:1-6; 26:7-24; 36:5; 37:11-21; 38:1-28). In fact, Jeremiah was nicknamed “The Weeping Prophet” because of the ill-treatment he suffered in the course of delivering God’s message to his people and making his society a better place. However, God was with him throughout. The growing popularity of wickedness and ungodliness in the society is making many people that want to uphold righteousness become more unpopular and at times suffer for their righteousness. Should this discourage them from promoting righteousness? NO! It may seem as if wickedness and ungodliness are flourishing now, but be sure that these are for a time. In spite of any suffering or hardship that may come with righteousness, there are promises of blessings and good fortunes for the righteous (see Psalms 1:3; 106:3; 112:4-8; Proverbs 10:16; 11:5-6, 18-19, 30; 12:28; 13:6; 14:34; 21:3; Isaiah 32:17; 33:15-16). Therefore, do not fret because of evildoers, and do not be weary in striving for justice and righteousness. You will get your reward in spite of what the world may say or do against you. In His service, Bayo Afolaranmi (Pastor). Prayer Point: Pray for the grace to always stand for justice and righteousness in spite of what it might cost you.

BIBLE VERSE FOR THE DAY “For laying aside the commandment of God, you hold the tradition of men—the washing of pitchers and cups, and many other such things you do” (Mark 7:8 NKJV). *********** QUOTE FOR THE DAY Do not let any human tradition, doctrine, saying, or practice drift you from obeying the word of God, no matter how popular such tradition, doctrine, saying, or practice is. It is far better to follow God and His words rather than human traditions. - Bayo Afolaranmi ************ PRAYER/ACTION FOR THE DAY O Lord, help me not to follow human traditions, doctrines, sayings, or practices to the detriment of Your word.

FOLLOW GOD, NOT HUMAN TRADITIONS

Dearly Beloved, FOLLOW GOD, NOT HUMAN TRADITIONS “For laying aside the commandment of God, you hold the tradition of men—the washing of pitchers and cups, and many other such things you do” (Mark 7:8 NKJV). The story of the old prophet and the young prophet in 1 Kings 13:11-31 is a pathetic one. It illustrates how many people prefer to listen to men rather than adhere to the words of God. In the story, God has specifically told the young prophet what he should do and not do as he went to deliver God’s message to the king of Israel. However, he yielded to the persuasion of a man and this cost him his life. The Pharisees and the teachers of the law in Jesus’ days on earth were like the young prophet. They had the Old Testament which was the expressed words of God, but they preferred to follow human traditions. These traditions were a set of rules that had to do mainly with outward cleansing and religiosity. Referring to the prophecy of Isaiah in Isaiah 29:13, Jesus condemned such acts and enjoined them to follow God and His commands (see Mark 7:8-13). It is good to follow human traditions, but one has to be very careful not to let what people say supersede what the word of God says. God has given His commands through His words written in the Holy Bible. Do not let any human tradition, doctrine, saying, or practice drift you from obeying the word of God, no matter how popular such tradition, doctrine, saying, or practice is. It is far better to follow God and His words rather than human traditions. In what ways are human traditions depriving you of following God’s words? In His service, Bayo Afolaranmi (Pastor). Prayer Point: O Lord, help me not to follow human traditions, doctrines, sayings, or practices to the detriment of Your word.

BIBLE VERSE FOR THE DAY “Who may ascend into the hill of the Lord? Or who may stand in His holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who has not lifted up his soul to an idol, nor sworn deceitfully” (Psalm 24:3-4 NKJV). *********** QUOTE FOR THE DAY Outward cleansing is not enough. Come to God in cleanliness and holiness. - Bayo Afolaranmi ************ PRAYER/ACTION FOR THE DAY Pray that you will prioritize your inward cleansing, not only the outward one, as you worship God and all the time.

CLEANLINESS IS NEXT TO GODLINESS

Dearly Beloved, CLEANLINESS IS NEXT TO GODLINESS “When [the priests] go into the tabernacle of meeting, or when they come near the altar to minister, to burn an offering made by fire to the Lord, they shall wash with water, lest they die” (Exodus 30:20 NKJV). When the deadly COVID-19 broke out in late 2019 and early 2020, one of the preventive measures put in place in many public places is running water for washing hands. People are enjoined to thoroughly wash their hands before entering public places and sanitize their hands regularly even after the washing. This is applicable at the entrance of many churches also. This may not be strange to Muslims who have the tradition of not only washing hands but also some other parts of their bodies before entering mosques or performing the daily mandatory prayers. These health and religious practices confirm the popular saying: cleanliness is next to godliness. As the people of Israel were going to the Promised Land through the wilderness, God prioritized the issue of cleanliness when the people, especially the priests, were about to perform religious duties. In the above-quoted text, God reiterated this by ordering Moses to prepare a washing utensil between the Tent of Meeting and the altar so that Aaron and his sons (and by extension other priests that would descend from them) would be able to wash their hands and feet as a prerequisite to their offering of sacrifice to Him. The penalty for the violation of the instruction was death! The practice was to be a lasting one among the priests. For health reasons, it is good to wash one’s hands and other parts of one’s body, not only before performing any act of worship to God but also all the time. However, God is expecting His people to “wash their hearts” before coming to Him and at all times. This would make them clean and holy. This is what the Psalmist was communicating in Psalm 24:3-4: “Who may ascend into the hill of the Lord? Or who may stand in His holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who has not lifted up his soul to an idol, nor sworn deceitfully” (NKJV). Outward cleansing is not enough. How clean and holy are you inwardly (in your heart) as you worship God, and even in your other daily activities? Come to God in cleanliness and holiness. In His service, Bayo Afolaranmi (Pastor). Prayer Point: Pray that you will prioritize your inward cleansing, not only the outward one, as you worship God and all the time.

BIBLE VERSE FOR THE DAY “Then the Lord said to him, ‘Now you Pharisees make the outside of the cup and dish clean, but your inward part is full of greed and wickedness’” (Luke 11:39 NKJV). *********** QUOTE FOR THE DAY Do not be a modern-day Pharisee. BE CLEANSED INSIDE AND OUT

Dearly Beloved, BE CLEANSED INSIDE AND OUT “Then the Lord said to him, ‘Now you Pharisees make the outside of the cup and dish clean, but your inward part is full of greed and wickedness’” (Luke 11:39 NKJV). How would you feel if get to a restaurant, ready to order for what you can eat, and you find out that the dishes and cup that the attendants are about to use to serve the food are only clean outside, but dirty inside? Would you allow them to use the half-clean utensils to serve you? Unfortunately, the Pharisees and many experts of the law while Jesus Christ was on earth were like those deceptive utensils. After a teaching engagement of Jesus Christ, one of the Pharisees invited Him for a meal in his house. The Pharisee was surprised that Jesus Christ did not follow the traditions of ceremonially washing His hands before the meal. He expressed his surprise. However, Jesus Christ compared him and other religious leaders to utensils that were clean outside but dirty inside. The Pharisees and other religious leaders were clean outside in their outward religious and ceremonial activities, but their lives were full of wickedness and greed against their fellow human beings. Jesus Christ did not spare them as He condemned them for this hypocritical lifestyle. He wanted them to live a life of honesty that will show concerns for less privilege and be acceptable to God. It is unfortunate that many people nowadays are like the Pharisees. They are outwardly religious, but inwardly not spiritual. Such people cannot deceive God with religious activities. Prophet Micah put it in other words: “[God] what does the Lord require of you but to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?” (6:8 NKJV). Do not be a modern-day Pharisee. Be cleansed inside and out. Do not be only religious outwardly. Be genuinely spiritual inwardly by acting honestly in your service to God and humanity. In His service, Bayo Afolaranmi (Pastor). Prayer Point: Pray that you will not only be religious outwardly but also be genuinely spiritual inwardly in your dealing with God and other people around you.

ALLOW GOD TO CUT AND SEW YOU

Dearly Beloved, ALLOW GOD TO CUT AND SEW YOU “But who can endure the day of His coming? And who can stand when He appears? For He is like a refiner’s fire and like launderers’ soap. He will sit as a refiner and a purifier of silver; He will purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer to the Lord an offering in righteousness” (Malachi 3:2-3 NKJV). In spite of the fact that my daughter is an undergraduate studying a promising course in one of the reputable universities, she is still learning how to sew clothes during the holidays. She brought a piece of cloth home one day and she began to cut it into pieces. As I watched her cutting the material, I got an inspiration that that is how the Lord also cut His creatures into pieces to “sew” them together to make a beautiful “dress”. Just as a piece of cloth is almost worthless until it is cut and sewn to become something admirable, man should submit himself to the cutting and sewing of God through many seemingly unpleasant situations in life to become who God wants to make him in life. Prophet Malachi gave a similar picture of God in his book when he presented God as a refiner who deliberately cast raw piece of gold into the burning flame to refine the gold in order to become an adorable precious ornament (see Malachi 3:2-3). Despite the fact that the context of this passage was that of judgment, yet, that is exactly what God does to His creatures. God may do this by allowing other men to “maltreat” His creatures, but it is for a purpose that will bring glory to His name (compare Psalm 66:12). No wonder, Apostle Paul declared, “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose” (Romans 8:28 NKJV). In what ways are you being “cut” and “sewn” in your journey of life? What seems like fire that is “burning” you presently? Do not be dismay. It is for a purpose! God is using the seemingly unpleasant situation to refine you and make you become adorable precious person in His sight and in the world. Endure and allow Him to make you what He wants through the seemingly unpleasant situation. You will become refined and people will admire you and give glory to God for your life. In His service, Bayo Afolaranmi (Pastor). Prayer Point: Pray for the grace to endure any seemingly unpleasant situation till God manifest Himself through the situation.

BIBLE VERSE FOR THE DAY “But as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, in order to bring it about as it is this day, to save many people alive” (Genesis 50:20 NKJV). *********** QUOTE FOR THE DAY It may seem as if people are doing bad things against you. YOUR DIVINE PURPOSE WILL BE FULFILLED

Dearly Beloved, YOUR DIVINE PURPOSE WILL BE FULFILLED “But as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, in order to bring it about as it is this day, to save many people alive” (Genesis 50:20 NKJV). Joseph was a favoured child among the children of Jacob. God had special plans for his life. His brothers had known these, and they were not happy with it. They looked for means to thwart these divine plans in his life. They eventually had the opportunity, and they first threw Joseph into a pit before they sold him into slavery in Egypt. Joseph was wrongly accused of sexual assault on his master's wife, and he was thrown into prison. In spite of his goodwill to other prisoners, he was forgotten and abandoned in the prison for years. However, all these seemingly bad players and situations in Joseph's life played vital roles though negatively to make Joseph fulfil his destiny. At times, God allows people to play seemingly bad roles in a person's life to make that person fulfil his divine destiny. Due to the negative actions of these people, the person may experience many unpleasant situations. However, no matter what, the purpose and plan of God for the person will finally come to pass. Are you experiencing unpleasant situation at the moment? Does it seem as if people are doing bad things against you? Do not be discouraged. God is using those seemingly bad people and bad situations to make you fulfil your divine purpose in life. Apostle Paul declared: “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose” (Romans 8:28 NKJV). Do not hate those seemingly bad people or wish them ill luck. As Joseph outlived his bad and unpleasant situations, you also will outlive your bad and unpleasant situations. As the seemingly bad people in the life of Joseph lived to witness the fulfillment of his divine purpose, those seemingly bad people in your will live long to witness your greatness in life. In fact, the Lord will prepare a table before you in the presence of your enemies, and anoint your head with oil, and your cup will run over (see Psalm 23:5). Come what may, your divine purpose will be fulfilled in Jesus’ name. Amen. In His service, Bayo Afolaranmi (Pastor). Prayer Point: Pray for the grace to be able to stand in spite of bad situations in your life till the divine purpose for you is fulfilled.

Spiritual Digest for the Day 05Sep2021

BIBLE VERSE FOR THE DAY “See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil” (Ephesians 5:15-16 NKJV). *********** QUOTE FOR THE DAY There is nothing special in the last four months of the year. You do not need to worry or fear about any “ember” month! All days are evil. Redeem each day or make the right use of every opportunity you have. - Bayo Afolaranmi ************ PRAYER/ACTION FOR THE DAY Pray for the continued protection of God over your life in the remaining months of this year and even beyond.

WHAT IS SPECIAL IN THE LAST FOUR MONTHS OF THE YEAR?

Dearly Beloved, WHAT IS SPECIAL IN THE LAST FOUR MONTHS OF THE YEAR? “See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil” (Ephesians 5:15-16 NKJV). There are some people I usually call by phone every Sunday morning to ask about their wellbeing. Being elderly ones, some of these people normally pray for me and my family members as we exchange pleasantries. As I called one of them last Sunday, one of her prayer points is that as we go into the last four months of the year (what some people refer to as "ember months"), evil things will not happen to me and all the members of my family. I said Amen to the prayer. However, I wondered aloud why some people give undue attention to the last four months of the year and think that they have more evil occurrences than the first eight months. Apostle Paul admonished, “See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil” (Ephesians 5:15-16 NKJV). Jesus Christ had earlier asserted “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble” (Matthew 6:34 NKJV). All days are indeed evil. It is only God that is saving us from these daily evils. Ascribing more evils to some months of the year or being too conscious of the months is not biblical. The Lord has promised to keep us all the days of our lives. We do not need panic about any month, week, day or time of the year. “He who keeps Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord is your keeper; the Lord is your shade at your right hand. The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord shall preserve you from all evil; He shall preserve your soul. The Lord shall preserve your going out and your coming in from this time forth, and even forevermore” (Psalm 121:4-8 NKJV). These promises are explicit enough. There is nothing special in the last four months of the year. You do not need to worry or fear about any “ember” month! All days are evil. Redeem each day or make the right use of every opportunity you have. The Lord that has been taking care of us since the beginning of the year will continue to take care of us till the end of the year and beyond. In His service, Bayo Afolaranmi (Pastor) Prayer Point: Pray for the continued protection of God over your life in the remaining months of this year and even beyond.
