Spiritual Digest for the Day 28Feb2019

BIBLE VERSE FOR THE DAY "No king achieves a victory with a large army. No warrior rescues himself by his own great strength. Horses are not a guarantee for victory. Their great strength cannot help someone escape. The LORD'S eyes are on those who fear him, on those who wait with hope for his mercy" (Psalm 33:16-18 GW). ****************** QUOTE FOR THE DAY Every success depends on God, not on our intelligence. He is the omnipotent and sovereign God. He gives true success to anyone that pleases Him. Your strength, knowledge, experience, wisdom, power, and position are good, but they cannot compete with God's wisdom. - Bayo Afolaranmi ******************** PRAYER/ACTION FOR THE DAY Pray that you will not depend on your strength, but on the sovereignty of God.

Spiritual Digest for the Day 24Feb2019

BIBLE VERSE FOR THE DAY “Therefore, prepare your minds for action; be self-controlled; set your hope fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed” (1 Peter 1:13 NIV). ****************** QUOTE FOR THE DAY Do you have “brake” in your life? How efficient is your brake? How are you controlling yourself, your actions, emotions, desires and passions, especially your sensual appetites? Only those who allow God a space in their lives and make His grace their brake fluid will have efficient brake called self control or temperance. - Bayo Afolaranmi ******************** PRAYER/ACTION FOR THE DAY Pray that the Lord will help you to always take care of the brake of your life and be using it effectively.

HOW EFFICIENT IS YOUR BRAKE?

Dearly Beloved, HOW EFFICIENT IS YOUR BRAKE? “Therefore, prepare your minds for action; be self-controlled; set your hope fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed” (1 Peter 1:13 NIV). “[God’s] grace instructs us to give up ungodly living and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in this world” (Titus 2:12 TEV). A brake is a device for arresting or preventing the motion of a mechanism usually by means of friction. It is a very important device in a vehicle. The brake system in a vehicle consists of handbrake, brake pedal, brake pad, and brake fluid container among other things. Anyone who will drive a vehicle must make sure that the brake system of the vehicle is functioning well. Brake failure can be very dangerous especially when it occurs unexpectedly on motion. Interestingly, applying brake abruptly and without tactics on motion can be more dangerous. Every normal human being must also have a brake system that he or she would be using to control him/herself. Such system is called self control or temperance. It is an act of controlling or mastering one’s actions, emotions, desires and passions, especially one’s sensual appetites. The Bible teaches that self-control is a virtue that every Christian should imbibe (Proverbs 23:1-3; 25:16; Daniel 1:8, 12-16; 1 Corinthians 7:9; 9:25; Galatians 5:22-23; 1 Thessalonians 5:6-8; 1 Timothy 3:2-3, 8; Titus 1:8; 2:2-3, 12; 1 Peter 1:13; 2 Peter 1:6). Only those who allow God a space in their lives and make His grace their brake fluid will have efficient brake called self control or temperance. It is unfortunate that some people do not have this important virtue. They do not know how to control or comport themselves when it matters most. No wonder, such people do things anyhow to their detriment. Their lack of self control has caused, and is still causing, avoidable havoc to their reputation. Do you have brake in your life? How efficient is your brake? How are you controlling yourself, your actions, emotions, desires and passions, especially your sensual appetites? Do you have effective control over yourself and these things? In His service, Bayo Afolaranmi (Pastor). Prayer Point: Pray that the Lord will help you to always take care of the brake of your life and be using it effectively.

SIXTEEN (16) YEARS OF MINISTERING THROUGH THE INTERNET!

Dearly Beloved, SIXTEEN (16) YEARS OF MINISTERING THROUGH THE INTERNET! I give glory to the Almighty God for the unique opportunity to consistently minister to people through the Internet and other technological tools for the past 16 years! An email devotional message sent to about 50 people on February 18, 2003 kick-started the ministry, and it has steadily grown into numerous aspects of ministering through the Internet and other technological tools to thousands (if not millions) of people throughout the world today. Only God deserves the praise! I thank you all that have partnered (and are still partnering) with me in the ministry, especially those that are rebroadcasting and/or forwarding my messages to other people. You are wonderful! Compilations of most of my messages for the past 16 years have been published in book forms. Visit http://www.lulu.com/spotlight/spiritualdigest to order them. God bless you! - Pastor Bayo Afolaranmi

Spiritual Digest for the Day 17Feb2019

BIBLE VERSE FOR THE DAY "But you, dear friends, build yourselves up in your most holy faith and pray in the Holy Spirit. Keep yourselves in God's love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life" (Jude 20-21 NIV). ****************** QUOTE FOR THE DAY Are people looking down on you because of your humble background or your seeming failure in your endeavors? Do not worry yourself about them. Continue the struggle. Victory is sure if you do not give up. - Bayo Afolaranmi ******************** PRAYER/ACTION FOR THE DAY Pray for the tenacity to continue your struggle till you make it in life.

YOU TOO CAN MAKE IT!

Dearly Beloved, YOU TOO CAN MAKE IT! "We want each of you to show this same diligence to the very end, in order to make your hope sure" (Hebrews 6:11 NIV). "But you, dear friends, build yourselves up in your most holy faith and pray in the Holy Spirit. Keep yourselves in God's love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life" (Jude 20-21 NIV). I read a story of a popular Yoruba dramatist recently in a national newspaper that touched my heart. It is about a 60-year-old dramatist who, with his second son in the same lecture room, got his first university degree at age 49, but now a doctorate degree holder and lecturer in one of the leading universities in Nigeria. He was able to have primary education because of the compulsory free education in the then Western Region of Nigeria. Apart from a kind of post-primary education then known as "modern education," the man could not go to secondary school because of the poverty of his parents. With determination after acting as dramatist both on stage and in movies for over three decades, he becomes an academic and an authority in his choosing profession - the theater. His life is indeed a challenge to many of us. Have you lost hope that you can no longer make it in a particular pursuit? Do not lose hope! Continue to persevere with determination that, one day, you will make it. Are people looking down on you because of your humble background or your seeming failure in your endeavors? Do not worry yourself about them. Continue the struggle. Remember that old proverb, "Aluta continua, victoria acerta," meaning "the struggle continues, the victory is sure." Victory is sure if you do not give up. Another popular saying goes thus, "Winners never quit; quitters never win."  Paul the apostle admonished, "Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up" (Galatians 6:9 NIV), and "Therefore, my dear brothers, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain" (1 Corinthians 15:58, NIV). You also can make it! In His service, Bayo Afolaranmi (Pastor). Prayer Point: Pray for the tenacity to continue your struggle till you make it in life.

Peace be within your walls, prosperity within your palaces.’ For the sake of my brethren and companions, I will now say, ‘Peace be within you.’ Because of the house of the Lord our God I will seek your good” (Psalm 122:6-9 NKJV). ****************** QUOTE FOR THE DAY Only those who do not want to prosper spiritually and otherwise will do things that will undermine the peaceful co-existence of citizens of any nation. A LEADER OR A SERVANT? (Pray for Nigeria!)

Dearly Beloved, This year is an election year in Nigeria. The election is unique because it will usher in new set of people as leaders of the nation. It will be another civilian-to-civilian transition that the fifty-eight-year old nation will experience. The presidential and national assembly elections will hold on February 16 and the gubernatorial and state houses of assembly election will hold on March 2 of this year. This made me to decide to resend the message below that I first sent in April 2003 when similar elections were held instead of the message relating to Valentine’s Day that I usually send a week to that occasion, and especially to solicit for your prayers for Nigeria during this transition period: A LEADER OR A SERVANT? "If today you will be a servant to these people and serve them and give them a favorable answer, they will always be your servants" (1 Kings 12:7 NIV). "You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many" (Mark 10:42-45 NIV). Another general election in Nigeria is around the corner. Many people are aspiring to political leadership positions. The incumbents have adopted the sit-tight syndrome. Others are scheming to take their positions. Most of the incumbents cannot sleep with their two eyes closed now because they did not serve the people they claim they are leading. Will the new ones also serve them if they are elected? That is the question we are asking ourselves, as we want to go to the poll. Rehoboam son of Solomon found himself in a similar situation after the death of his father. He wanted to succeed his father as the king of Israel. The people told him their problem during the reign of his father, and ask him about what they should expect during his reign. It was like asking for his manifesto. He went to the elders that used to advise his father. They gave him fine advice that any person that wants to be a leader today has to think of: "If today you will be a servant to these people and serve them and give them a favorable answer, they will always be your servants" (1 Kings 12:7 NIV). In other words, if you want to lead people, be prepare to serve them. The people in turn will become your servants. Jesus Christ also gave the same principle in Mark 10:42-45: if you want to be a leader, first be the servant of the people you want to lead. Then you will be seen as a good leader. Jesus Christ did not only teach this, He also demonstrated it by "taking the very nature of a servant" (Philippians 2:7) in coming to this world not come to be served, but to serve other people. Rehoboam did not heed to the advice of the elders, and it cost him most part of the kingdom. Jesus Christ heeded to the advice, and He is given the Name above all names (Philippians 2: 6-11). It is not bad to aspire to become a leader. However, are you aspiring to serve the people or to lead them (lord it over them)? If you will be a good leader, first be the servant of your people. Our call as leader is servant-leadership. In His service, Bayo Afolaranmi (Pastor). SPECIAL APPEAL - Please pray for Nigeria, as we are about to elect new leaders. - Pray for free and fair elections. - Pray that this civilian-to-civilian transition will be a success. - Pray against any form of violence before, during and after the elections. - Pray for the absolute will of God to be done.

MY FAITH LOOKS UP TO THEE

Dearly Beloved, MY FAITH LOOKS UP TO THEE “Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God” (Hebrews 12:2 NKJV). This faith-inspiring hymn “MY FAITH LOOKS UP TO THEE” was composed by Ray Palmer (1808-1887). Palmer was an unhappy and lonely young man who was tending a dry goods store and teaching in a private girls’ school to make ends meet before he became an ordained minister in the Congregationalist Church. He composed this hymn one night when he was studying and translating some German poetry. He did not have the intention of publishing the hymn until he met Lowell Mason (1792–1872) who was compiling a hymnbook. Mason asked Palmer if he (that is, Palmer) had any hymn, and Palmer gave Mason the hymn that he had treasured privately for two years. Mason composed the tune for the hymn “Olivet” and published it in his hymnbook. The hymn later became one of the most famous hymns from American history that was used as a source of encouragement and tranquility by soldiers during the American Civil War. As a young man who was struggling with discouragement, poor health, and a lack of funds, Palmer preferred to look up by faith to Jesus Christ – “Lamb of Calvary”. He rather focused on his spiritual weakness and prayed that the divine Savior would take all his guilt away and be wholly belong to Him from that day. As the Lord told Apostle Paul that His grace is sufficient for him (see 2 Corinthians 12:9), Palmer asked for the rich grace of God to impart and strength his fainting heart and inspire his zeal. He wanted his love to the Lord that died for him to be “pure, warm, and changeless” and be “a living fire.” Palmer indeed suffered many grieves in his youthful years, but he looked unto Jesus Christ to be his guide and change his sorrowful story, as he pleaded that he would not stray away from Him. Lastly, Palmer was conscious of death “as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment” (Hebrews 9:27 NKJV). So, he wanted the blessed Savior to give him eternal rest above as “a ransomed soul”. What is your situation presently? Are you facing discouragement, health challenges or financial issues? Whatever your situation may be, let your faith look unto Jesus Christ, the author and finisher of our faith, who Himself endured suffering on the cross and its accompany shame, but who is now seated at the right hand of the throne of God (see Hebrews 12:2). Let Him be your guide. His grace will be sufficient for you. Even if you die, He will give His eternal rest to you as a ransomed soul. In His service, Bayo Afolaranmi (Pastor). Prayer Point: Pray that your faith will continuously look unto Jesus Christ in whatever situation you may find yourself.
