THE FAITHFUL STEWARD OF GOD’S GRACE

Dearly Beloved, THE FAITHFUL STEWARD OF GOD’S GRACE “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms” (1 Peter 4:10 NIV). The Nigerian Baptist Convention is holding its 106th annual session Ogbomoso presently. The general theme for the session is: “Moving Forward: Building a Great Church through Faithful Stewardship” and 1 Peter 4:10 (quoted above) is the theme verse. So, my message for this week will be based on that theme and the biblical verse. There are five (5) important truths from the verse. Firstly, every human being on earth is a steward. God created the first man, Adam, and put him in the Garden of Eden as a steward to take care of the garden. God is still expecting each one of us to take care of what we have or where we are. Secondly, what you have is a gift. Even, you as a person are a gift from God! The psalmist referred to every child as a heritage given by God (see Psalm 127:3). You do not belong to yourself. You belong to God (see Psalm 100:3). Apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 6:20 said that we were bought at price! Everything you have is a gift from God because there is nothing that you have that you have not received (see 1 Corinthians 4:7). These gifts (including your life) are referred to in the theme verse as God’s grace given as God assigned it (see Ephesians 4:7). Grace has been defined as unmerited favour of God. No one merits it, and God cannot be questioned on how He distributes it. Nevertheless, no one should misuse this grace freely given him/her by God. Thirdly, you are to serve others! What you have is not for your selfish interest. You are to use your gifts for the upliftment of others. These gifts (including your life) are also to be used for the glory of God (see 1 Corinthians 10:31; 1 Peter 4:11). Fourthly, there are different gifts. The theme verse also points it out that these gifts come in various forms. We need to first realize that no two individuals are the same. God has created us in different colours, race, heights, sizes, backgrounds, traits, endowments, gifts, knowledge, level of understanding, numbers of years and the likes. At least, there are 18 different spiritual gifts identified in the New Testament. Lastly, you are to be faithful! It is expected of a steward to be faithful (see 1 Corinthians 4:2). This faithfulness does not have to do with our relationship with God alone. It has to do with relationship with other people. It is interesting to note that some people are not faithful even to themselves! God is expecting us as His stewards to faithfully use our lives and other resources that He has graciously given us for the good of others and for His glory. Are you faithfully using these gifts? Will He find you faithful and reward you for your faithfulness? In His service, Bayo Afolaranmi (Pastor). Prayer Point: Pray that you will always be faithful in using the gifts that God has endowed you with for the good of others and to His glory.

BIBLE VERSE FOR THE DAY “For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified” (1 Corinthians 2:2 NKJV). ****************** QUOTE FOR THE DAY I need no other argument, I need no other plea; it is enough that Jesus died, and that He died for me. - Eliza Edmunds Hewitt ******************** PRAYER/ACTION FOR THE DAY Pray that you will be able to put your total trust in the crucified and resurrected Jesus Christ.

“I NEED NO OTHER ARGUMENT”

Dearly Beloved, “I NEED NO OTHER ARGUMENT” “For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified” (1 Corinthians 2:2 NKJV). As one of my online contacts was discussing the demerits of polygamy with me in reaction to my message on the theme last week, she referred in passing to the popular refrain, “I need no other argument, I need no other plea...." We continued our discussion, but it was as if I was hearing that refrain for the first time. Here is the full refrain: “I need no other argument, I need no other plea; it is enough that Jesus died, and that He died for me.” Interestingly, it was the week commemorating the Passion Week. While the emphasis of the whole hymn “My Faith Has Found a Resting Place” with the refrain “I need no other argument..." is that Jesus Christ is the only basis for our faith, I am still fascinated by the fact that Jesus Christ died for me, and that is indeed enough for me. This led to know more about the hymn and its composer. The story of the composer of the hymn, Eliza Edmunds Hewitt (1851-1920), is very pathetic. As a teacher, she became invalid as a result of a serious spinal problem when a student struck her with a heavy slate. She lived the rest of her life in this state even though she was able to partially recover. No wonder, she could write that her faith found a resting place in Jesus Christ and that she needed no other argument or plea because the death of Jesus Christ was enough for her. Only someone who knows the efficacy of the death of Jesus Christ and has put his/her total trust in Him can find such rest. Her faith was not in any device or creed. The faith was in the ever-living One who was wounded for her. Eliza Hewitt knew that Jesus Christ saves, and that ended her fear and doubt. She knew that Jesus Christ would never cast anyone out if such person comes to Him. The heart of Eliza leant on the written Word of God because she was saved by the name of her Saviour through His blood. In spite of her infirmity, Eliza asserted that her great Physician can heal the sick, and that He can save the lost because He has shed His precious blood and gave His life for her on the cross. Indeed, Eliza needed no other argument or plea! Apostle Paul likewise did not want to know any other thing among his Corinthian audience except the crucified Jesus Christ (see 1 Corinthians 2:2). No other argument! What is your real or seeming infirmity? What is your present predicament? Put your total trust in Jesus Christ. Let your heart lean on His words. He has promised never to cast away anyone that trusts in Him (see John 6:37). Believe in His healing power, not only for your physical infirmity, but also for emotional, financial, and most especially spiritual infirmities. He “bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed” (1 Peter 2:24 NKJV). As a matter of fact, “I need no other argument, I need no other plea; it is enough that Jesus died, and that He died for me.” In His service, Bayo Afolaranmi (Pastor). Prayer Point: Pray that you will be able to put your total trust in the crucified and resurrected Jesus Christ.

BIBLE VERSE FOR THE DAY “And [Jesus Christ] answered and said to them, ‘Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning “made them male and female,” and said, “For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh”?’” (Matthew 19:4-5 NKJV). ****************** QUOTE FOR THE DAY Any sexual and marital affair outside one man, one wife is a sin no matter how popular or acceptable it may be in any culture or religion. - Bayo Afolaranmi ******************** PRAYER/ACTION FOR THE DAY Pray that you will not pervert the original plan and purpose of marriage in any way, and that you will be faithful to your legally wedded spouse all the time.

ONE MAN, ONE WIFE

Dearly Beloved, ONE MAN, ONE WIFE “And [Jesus Christ] answered and said to them, ‘Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning “made them male and female,” and said, “For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh”?’” (Matthew 19:4-5 NKJV). The mind of anyone who attended secondary schools or who was a student of literature in English in any tertiary institution in Nigeria in the 1970s and 1980s may likely go to one of the books of Timothy Mofolorunso “T.M.” Aluko (1918-2010) titled “ONE MAN, ONE WIFE”. However, this message is not about that book though invariably it is about the controversy in the book: monogamy versus polygamy. Many African cultures and some world religions especially Islam encourage polygamy (having more than one wife at a given time) while the conventional Christianity sticks to monogamy (having only one wife at a given time) as the ideal and original form of marriage. Recently, some clergymen started advocating polygamy in Christianity claiming that God did not (and still does not) condemn polygamy in the Bible. They are ready to refer to many Bible characters like Abraham, Jacob, David, Solomon, and others that were polygamists, and yet had very intimate relationships with God. There is even a Bible reference, 2 Samuel 12:8, where God sent prophet Nathan to rebuke King David for David’s adulterous and murderous sin, and God was saying that He was ready to give David more wives if he had wanted! Did God ever approve polygamy or any other form of marriage apart from monogamy that is one man, one wife? This is a question that one needs to answer sincerely without any sentiment. It is a fact that polygamy has been practiced almost as early as man has been on earth. The first recorded polygamist in the Bible was the murderer Lamech (Genesis 4:23-24). Would one say that because polygamy has been an age-long practice, it should become the norm? Interestingly, sin generally is older than polygamy! Would that made sin acceptable or right? Does the fact that God tolerated some polygamous people in the Bible make polygamy right? While Jesus Christ was answering question about divorce, He referred to the original plan and purpose of God for marriage: one man, one wife (see Matthew 19:4-5; Mark 10:5-9). In His infinite wisdom, when God was solving the problem of aloneness for the first man, Adam, He created ONE WOMAN for him (see Genesis 2:18-25), and for that reason He said that the man will cleave to his wife (note: not wives!). However, in some men’s finite wisdom, they started having many wives, and they think that that is the best for them. There is no way a finite arrangement can supersede an infinite one. God may permit some people to have more than one wife like He, through Moses, “because of the hardness of your hearts, permitted [the Israelites] to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so” (Matthew 19:8 NKJV). It has been proved from experiences that the ideal form of marriage is monogamy. People that come from polygamous background will testify to this. Any other form of marriage apart from monogamy (whether polygamy, bigamy, polyandry, polygyny, group marriage, same-sex marriage, fixed-term marriage, or symbolic marriage) is an aberration. There are some people who have only one spouse, but they engage in extra-marital affairs with other people. That is called adultery, and it a sin. Anyone who commits it sins against his/her body (see 1 Corinthians 6:18), spouse, and ultimately God. The implication of this is that a man should be faithful to his legally wedded wife (not wives), and a woman should be faithful to her legally wedded husband (not husbands). (It has to be noted here that the word “wife” originally referred to a woman, not to a man as some same-sex marriage advocates would want us to accept today.) Any sexual and marital affair outside one man, one wife is a sin no matter how popular or acceptable it may be in any culture or religion. Period! In His service, Bayo Afolaranmi (Pastor). Prayer Point: Pray that you will not pervert the original plan and purpose of marriage in any way, and that you will be faithful to your legally wedded spouse all the time. BIBLE VERSE FOR THE DAY "For we are God's fellow-workers; you are God's field, God's building" (1 Corinthians 3:9 NIV). ****************** QUOTE FOR THE DAY You are in a place where people need you to work together with them for a common cause. No matter how small or insignificant your part may be, work together with others faithfully. - Bayo Afolaranmi ******************** PRAYER/ACTION FOR THE DAY Pray that you will always cooperate with others as you work with them for a common cause.

LET US WORK TOGETHER FOR THE COMMON CAUSE

Dearly Beloved, LET US WORK TOGETHER FOR THE COMMON CAUSE "So Joshua fought the Amalekites as Moses had ordered.... As long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites were winning, but whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalekites were winning. When Moses' hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up... so that his hands remained steady till sunset. So Joshua overcame the Amalekite army with the sword" (Exodus 17:10-13 NIV). One of the fascinating and unforgettable experiences I had in my one-year-and-two-month sojourn in Northern Ireland, United Kingdom was my experience as a casual worker in a food processing company. The way each one of us (both skilled and unskilled) manning different aspects of the processing machines collaborated to prepare fast foods like sandwiches, rolls, baps and wraps, toasties, paninis, baguettes, snack pots, scones, cakes and the likes is very interesting. However, any slack from any of us during the process can slow down or destruct the whole process. I learnt more about team spirit in working with other people to actualize a common goal from that company. Likewise, as professional writer for devotional and other religious-related materials for my denomination for almost two decades, the process of the literatures we produce is another fascinating one. From curriculum developers, topic/theme assigners, writers, editors, typesetters, proofreaders, printers, distributors, to the sellers, each of us work together so that the readers will have something worthwhile to use for their spiritual growth. If anyone in this team fails to do his/her part properly and/or in time, the users of the literatures will suffer for it in a way. These two experiences remind me of one of the favourite songs of the Baptist Women Missionary Union of Nigeria that goes thus: "If we work together, Together, together; If we work together, the happier we'll be. Your work and my work, our work for the Lord; If we work together, the happier we'll be." An incident that happened to the people of Israel as they were going from Egypt (their land of slavery) to Canaan (their promised land) corroborates this. On their way, the Amalekites decided to waylay them. There was no reason given for this attack. Moses, however, rose to the task by sending Joshua and some men to go and fight the Amalekites. He also decided to do his own part in the battle by going up to a mountain to intercede for them. Joshua led the fighting men to battle against the Amalekites. Moses also led two other people, Aaron and Hur, to a mountain where he interceded for the fighting men. As long as he raised his hands up, the Israelites were winning, but the Amalekites would be winning whenever he lowered his hands. It came to a point that he was tied. Aaron and Hur then did their own part in finding a seat for Moses and helping him to raise his hands up, ensuring that the Israelites eventually had total victory. Five different kinds of people worked together for a common cause to give the Israelites success: 1) Joshua that heeded to the order of Moses in choosing and leading the fighting men; 2) the choosing men that did the fighting; 3) Moses that went to intercede for them; 4) Aaron and Hur that held Moses' hands when he was tired; and 5) God that gave the victory. The role of none of these people cannot be underestimated. Likewise, the motto of the union referred to above is relevant here: "For we are God's fellow-workers; you are God's field, God's building" (1 Corinthians 3:9 NIV). You are in a place where people need you to work together with them for a common cause. It may be in your local church, in a workplace, or in any other place. Even if you into a one-man business, you still need to collaborate with other people to make that business thrive. How are you doing your part for the common cause? No matter how small or insignificant your part may be, work together with others faithfully. In His service, Bayo Afolaranmi (Pastor). Prayer Point: Pray that you will always cooperate with others as you work with them for a common cause.
