Spiritual Digest for the Day 31Jul2022

BIBLE VERSE FOR THE DAY “The works of the Lord are great, studied by all who have pleasure in them. His work is honorable and glorious, and His righteousness endures forever” (Psalm 111:2-3 NKJV). *********** QUOTE FOR THE DAY God is indeed great, and great are His deeds! Acknowledge His greatness in your life by worshipping Him for who He is and thanking Him for what He is doing for you. - Bayo Afolaranmi ************ PRAYER/ACTION FOR THE DAY Pray that you always appreciate the greatness of God in your life.

GREAT IS MY GOD!

Dearly Beloved, GREAT IS MY GOD! “The works of the Lord are great, studied by all who have pleasure in them. His work is honorable and glorious, and His righteousness endures forever” (Psalm 111:2-3 NKJV). The greatness of our God, especially the greatness of His works, cannot be overemphasized. I do not know about any other person, but God has been demonstrating His greatness in my life and my family. From the beginning of my life till now, I can experience the greatness of God. I can look back and see how great God has been in my life. In spite of all odds, God has been great in my life. He has done so much for ME. I cannot tell it all. I will extol the LORD God with all my heart among the living. Great is MY God! I will continue to declare His greatness. I will continue to praise Him for who He is and thank Him for what He is doing in my life. The greatness of God is the thrust of Psalm 111. The psalmist declared that he would extol the Lord with all his heart among the upright people that take delight in God. He enumerated the glorious and majestic deeds of God thus: God provides food for those who fear Him; He remembers His covenant forever; He shows His people the power of His works by giving them the lands of other nations; He provided redemption for His people; and He ordained His covenant for ever. Because of these, the works of His hands are done in faithfulness and uprightness and they are steadfast forever and ever. Have you also thought about the greatness of God in your life? Have you thought about all He has done for you this year? Has He not demonstrated His greatness in your life? Can you also enumerate what He has done, and is still doing, in your life? God is indeed great and great are His deeds! Like the psalmist, we also have to acknowledge His greatness in our lives by worshiping Him for who He is and by thanking Him for what He is doing for us. Indeed, “Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised in the city of our God, in His holy mountain” (Psalm 48:1 NKJV). In His service, Bayo Afolaranmi (Pastor). Prayer Point: Pray that you will be able to appreciate the greatness of God in your life.

BIBLE VERSE FOR THE DAY “The hand of the Lord came upon me and brought me out in the Spirit of the Lord, and set me down in the midst of the valley; and it was full of bones. Then He caused me to pass by them all around, and behold, there were very many in the open valley; and indeed they were very dry. And He said to me, ‘Son of man, can these bones live?’ So I answered, ‘O Lord God, You know’” (Ezekiel 37:1-3 NKJV). *********** QUOTE FOR THE DAY The bones of uprightness can live again wherever you find yourself by contributing your own positive quota towards your society. Shun corruption in any form! - Bayo Afolaranmi ************ PRAYER/ACTION FOR THE DAY Pray that the Sovereign Lord will break every yoke of corruption in your life and society.

CAN THESE BONES LIVE?

Dearly Beloved, CAN THESE BONES LIVE? “The hand of the Lord came upon me and brought me out in the Spirit of the Lord, and set me down in the midst of the valley; and it was full of bones. Then He caused me to pass by them all around, and behold, there were very many in the open valley; and indeed they were very dry. And He said to me, ‘Son of man, can these bones live?’ So I answered, ‘O Lord God, You know’” (Ezekiel 37:1-3 NKJV). I am not happy with the level of corruption in my country, Nigeria. Corruption has eating deep into the fibre of every place from the highest level in the corridors of power in the country to the lowest level one can think of. Even, our religious (and especially Christian) settings are not left out of this moral decadence. I have been thinking if there would be any remedy from this situation. Will Nigeria ever be corruption free again? As I ruminated on this, the vision of Ezekiel in Ezekiel 37 came to my mind and specifically, the question of the Sovereign Lord: “Can these bones live?” Ezekiel could not answer the question, but the Lord asked him to command the dry bones to come back to life. After the dry bones had come back to life at Ezekiel’s command, the Lord gave the meaning of the vision: the dry bones were the whole house of Israel who thought that “[their] bones are dry, [their] hope is lost, and [they themselves] are cut off!” (verse 11 NKJV). The Lord then asked Ezekiel to prophesy to the people that He (God) would open their graves and bring them up from their scattered places; that He would bring them back to the land of Israel. After these, the people of Israel would know that He is the Lord, when He opens their graves and brings them up from the far places. He also promised to put His Spirit in them and that they would live (see verses 12-14). In spite of the level of corruption in Nigeria, I believe that Nigeria will be free of corruption one day. Only, I cannot say how soon this will be. However, what role am I playing to make this come to reality sooner? What roles are you playing to make Nigeria corruption free? For non-Nigerians, what roles are you playing to make your society corruption free? The bones of uprightness can live again wherever you find yourself by contributing your own positive quota towards it. Shun corruption in any form! In His service, Bayo Afolaranmi (Pastor). Prayer Point: Pray that the Sovereign Lord will break every yoke of corruption in your life and society.

BIBLE VERSE FOR THE DAY “By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples” (John 15:8 NKJV). *********** QUOTE FOR THE DAY The desire of the Lord Jesus Christ is that you bear fruit that will glorify God. Anything that would not bring glory to God is not worth doing. - Bayo Afolaranmi ************ PRAYER/ACTION FOR THE DAY Pray that you will continue to bear fruit for Christ so that God will be glorified in your life.

BEAR FRUIT TO THE GLORY OF GOD

Dearly Beloved, BEAR FRUIT TO THE GLORY OF GOD “By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples” (John 15:8 NKJV). Can you imagine planting a tree that refuses to bear desired fruits? What would you do to such a tree? How would you treat a tree that bears its fruits in due season? The discourse of Jesus Christ recorded in John 15 was part of His valedictory speech to His disciples. It is believed by some Bible scholars that the discourse was delivered in the Temple, where there was a golden vine symbolizing the life of Israel as God’s vine. Other scholars believe that it was delivered on the Mount of Olives, where there were many vine and olive trees. This discourse was the last “I AM” saying out of the seven of such sayings in the Gospel of St. John. Jesus Christ declared: “I am the true vine.... you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit..." (John 15:1, 5 NKJV). The analogy of the vine was familiar to the disciples of Jesus Christ because in the Old Testament, the people of Israel were referred to as God’s vine (Psalm 80:8-16; Isaiah 5:1-7; Jeremiah 2: 21). It was a pity that the people of Israel failed God in not bearing the desired good fruit. They became wild vine. So, Jesus Christ referred to Himself as the true Vine because He was doing the will of His father, and His personal life testifies to it. The secret of this was that God, the Gardener, was in charge of all He was doing. The Vine plant is the common grapevine that is slender and trails on the ground or climbs support. It is one of the prominent plants in Palestine. You can liken it to any prominent tree in your neighbourhood. In John 15:5, Jesus Christ referred to His disciples, and every Christian, as the branches of the vine. A branch cannot exist on itself. For it to survive, it must remain in the plant. Moreover, its main purpose is to bear fruits. Christians are to bear fruits from Jesus Christ. They are not to produce the fruits. To bear is to bring forth from another thing, but to produce is to make, create, grow, or manufacture something. The fruits that we are to bear involve a godly life (Matthew 7:16-20), and virtues of character (Galatians 5:22-23; Ephesians 5:9; Philippians 1:11). We are not just to bear fruit, but also to bear much fruit (John 15:2, 8). This is why Jesus Christ will prune us to bear much fruit – fruit that will last (John 15:2, 8, 16). However, to be able to bear fruit for Christ, Christians have to remain in Him (John 15:4). Just as an ordinary branch has to remain in the plant for it to survive, we also have to remain in Jesus Christ. If we do not remain in Him, we are like a cutaway branch that will soon wither and become firewood. Jesus Christ said it point-blank that, “…for without Me you can do nothing” (John 15:5b NKJV). Are you in Christ? Jesus Christ promised two things for those who remain in Him and bear fruit for Him. These two things are: growth (John 15:2) and answer to prayer (John 15:7). He promised to prune everyone that is bearing fruit for Him. In Palestine, every year, gardeners prune their vines. They cut off the dead wood, which has no life in it, and trim the living branches so that their yield will be greater. Likewise, God is dressing every fruitful believer to make him/her grow in the faith. Furthermore, suppose anyone remains in Jesus Christ. In that case, his/her prayers will be answered (cf. Proverbs 28:9). God is ready to do whatever he/she wishes, provided it is in accordance with God’s will (John 14:13; 1 John 3:21-22; 5:14-15), and will give God glory (cf. John 15:8). The main thing for bearing fruit for Jesus Christ is for God to be glorified (John 15:8). Anything that would not bring glory to God is not worth doing (see John 2:11; 1 Corinthians 10:31; 1 Peter 5:8-11). The desire of the Lord Jesus Christ is that you bear fruit that will glorify God. Are you bearing fruit for Jesus Christ to the glory of God? In His service, Bayo Afolaranmi (Pastor). Prayer Point: Pray that you will continue to bear fruit for Christ so that God will be glorified in your life.

BIBLE VERSE FOR THE DAY “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord” (Colossians 3:16 NKJV). *********** QUOTE FOR THE DAY Take any hymnal or search online for Christian hymns and discover the beauty and inspirations in these hymns, even those that are not popular or commonly sung. As good as modern short songs and choruses may be, older hymns are still relevant and very inspiring to date. - Bayo Afolaranmi ************ PRAYER/ACTION FOR THE DAY Pray that you will create time to meditate on the old hymns and see their relevance to your life.

THEY ARE STILL RELEVANT!

Dearly Beloved, THEY ARE STILL RELEVANT! “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord” (Colossians 3:16 NKJV). One of the aspects of my Internet ministry is what I tag “Ministering through Daily Hymns” where through various social media I daily send the lyrics of a hymn that corresponds with the Bible verse and inspiring quote that I have sent earlier in the day. At times, as led by the Holy Spirit, I extract some parts of such lyrics and make them prayer wishes that I periodically send also through various social media and text messages. From experience, people rarely react to the lyrics of daily hymns, but mostly react to the prayer wishes extracted from the lyrics and testify how such prayer wishes are timely to their situations. I always wonder: Does it mean the lyrics are not inspiring and timely? Are they no longer relevant? Unfortunately, many present-day Christians and churches do not attach much importance to the singing of hymns. They consider hymns outdated and no longer relevant in Christian worship. They prefer modern short songs and choruses. Churches and people that value and sing hymns are derogatively termed traditional or orthodox. No wonder these modern-day Christians are missing the inspirations of the lyrics of these “old” hymns. However, Apostle Paul advised that we should not be unwise, but amongst other things speak “to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord” (Ephesians 5:19 NKJV). He gave similar admonition in Colossians 3:16 quoted above. The reason of his admonitions is not far-fetched. People inspired by their personal experiences and relationships with God composed these hymns. Space would not permit me to mention the old hymns that are still very relevant and inspiring to date. Take any hymnal or search online for these hymns and discover the beauty and inspirations in these hymns, even those that are not popular or commonly sung. As good as modern short songs and choruses may be, older hymns are still relevant and very inspiring to date. Do you love hymns? They are still relevant! In His service, Bayo Afolaranmi (Pastor).
