Spiritual Digest for the Day 28May2017

BIBLE VERSE FOR THE DAY “Let me die the death of the righteous, and let my end be like his!” (Numbers 23:10b NKJV). ****************** QUOTE FOR THE DAY Anyone that will die the death of the righteous has to walk towards it by living a righteous life towards God and other human beings. - Bayo Afolaranmi ******************** PRAYER/ACTION FOR THE DAY Pray that you will be able to live a life of righteousness so as to be able to die the death of the righteous.

THE DEATH OF THE RIGHTEOUS (in honour of late Evang. Job Alabi)

Dearly Beloved, THE DEATH OF THE RIGHTEOUS (in honour of late Evang. Job Alabi) “Let me die the death of the righteous, and let my end be like his!” (Numbers 23:10b NKJV). I am overwhelmed by the apt reactions of people (especially on social media) to the news of the death of late Evangelist Job Adegboyega Alabi, the first known full-time and one of the greatest evangelists of the Nigerian Baptist Convention who died peacefully in his home in the morning of Friday 26 May 2017. Here was a man who was “forced” to resign from the pastorate of a local church and become an itinerary evangelist in a setting that did not recognize such then. He spearheaded the official recognition of evangelists in his denomination and did the work of an evangelist full time till his last day on earth. He influenced the lives of many people throughout his denomination and even beyond in spite of the fact that he did not hold any known "influential" official position at any level in the denomination or the society. He was a role model to many pastors and members of his denomination. The great man of God did not have any scandal whatsoever in his ministry as a church pastor and later a full-time evangelist. His death is indeed an irreparable loss to humanity. As many people were (and still are) reacting to his home call within hours of his passing away with many good comments, remarkable reminiscences of his life and their encounters with him as if these people have rehearsed the reactions before his sudden death, the words of Balaam in Numbers 23:10 came to my mind: “Let me die the death of the righteous, and let my end be like his!” (NKJV). How I wish my end were like that. How I wish that people reacted to my home call with good comments about me, and recalled their good reminiscences of their encounter with me. How I wish I leaved this world in active service to the Lord without any scandal. Unfortunately, Balaam that made that statement did not live and die a righteous man. He specialized in cursing people and “loved the wages of unrighteousness” (2 Peter 2:15 NKJV). He was summoned to curse the people of Israel, and he tried to do so on three different occasions despite the fact that he knew that God did not want to curse them (see Numbers 22-24). He subsequently advised Balak to lure the people of Israel to sin (see Numbers 25, Revelation 2:14). He died fighting against the people of God (Numbers 31:8). What a pity! “Let me die the death of the righteous, and let my end be like his!” It is not a wish. Anyone that will die the death of the righteous has to walk towards it by living a righteous life towards God and other human being. Will you die the death of the righteous? Will your end be like the end of the righteous? Start living a righteous and dedicated life now. In His service, Bayo Afolaranmi (Pastor). Prayer Point: Pray that you will be able to live a life of righteousness so as to be able to die the death of the righteous. NB This message is dedicated to late Evangelist Job Adegboyega Alabi (1975-2017), the great evangelist of the Nigerian Baptist Convention who died on 26 May 2017.

Spiritual Digest for the Day 21May2017

BIBLE VERSE FOR THE DAY “‘Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or discouraged because of the king of Assyria and the vast army with him, for there is a greater power with us than with him. With him is only the arm of flesh, but with us is the LORD our God to help us and to fight our battles.’ And the people gained confidence from what Hezekiah the king of Judah said” (2 Chronicles 32:7-8 NIV). ****************** QUOTE FOR THE DAY Do not be discouraged! Trust in God. He is with you. He will fight your battles, and you will soon testify to His goodness over your life. - Bayo Afolaranmi ******************** PRAYER/ACTION FOR THE DAY Pray that you will not be discouraged in spite of any opposition you may have.

DO NOT BE DISCOURAGED

Dearly Beloved, DO NOT BE DISCOURAGED  “‘Be strong and courageous. Sennacherib king of Assyria who was the then world power came to invade the land of Judah. He threatened the people to surrender to him instead of yielding to the words of encouragement from Hezekiah the king of Judah. The people had every cause to panic because of the military successes of that Assyrian king and his predecessors. However, they gained confidence from what Hezekiah said because they believed as Hezekiah said that Sennacherib depended on human resources while they had the divine backing.  The LORD indeed helped the people, and the human resources of Sennacherib failed him woefully. People tend to rely on human and material resources today, and they may be using them to oppress other people. However, the oppressed should not be discouraged. If they can put their trust in God as the people of Judah did, God would help them in His own way and His own time. No matter the strength of the oppressor, the Lord has promised, “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand” (Isaiah 41:10 NIV), “…because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world” (1 John 4:4 NIV). Who or what is the “Sennacherib” that has “invaded” your life and that is making you to be afraid or discouraged? Is the thing or person threatening you and you are about to lose hope? Do not be discouraged! Like Hezekiah, I am imploring you to trust in God. He is with you. He will fight your battles, and you will soon testify to His goodness over your life. In His service, Bayo Afolaranmi (Pastor). Prayer Point: Pray that you will not be discouraged in spite of any opposition you may have.

Spiritual Digest for the Day 14May2017

BIBLE VERSE FOR THE DAY “For God will bring every work into judgment, including every secret thing, whether good or evil” (Ecclesiastes 12:14 NKJV.) ****************** QUOTE FOR THE DAY Apart from the “rewards” that people will give those that have left their scenes of authority, God will also bring their actions and inactions into judgment. - Bayo Afolaranmi ******************** PRAYER/ACTION FOR THE DAY Pray that you will act your scene of authority well in a way that you will receive positive “rewards” from other people and God after you leave the scene.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN AFTER YOUR SCENE?

Dearly Beloved, WHAT WILL HAPPEN AFTER YOUR SCENE? “So Haman was terrified before the king and queen.... So they hanged Haman on the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai” (Esther 7:6b, 10a NKJV). “Say to the righteous that it shall be well with them, for they shall eat the fruit of their doings. Woe to the wicked! It shall be ill with him, for the reward of his hands shall be given him” (Isaiah 3:10-11 NKJV). Recently, I was with a group of people that were discussing jokingly about somebody who has just left a position of authority. To this people, the person has become a subject of ridicule because he did not behave well to others when he was in authority. In fact, he can no longer relate well with others because his actions and inactions while in office are hunting him negatively now. Nobody even wants to be associated with him. I do not know this person, but, the comments of the people about him after he has left that office of authority made me think deeply about myself: if I leave the scene that I am presently, what will people say about me? Will I be able to move freely with the people over whom I once had authority? Will these people be ready to be associated with me after all those juicy things that come with the office are no longer there? What will I be remembered for after I have left the scene? Every position of authority is tenured. It will come to an end one day either by time frame or ultimately by death. No position of authority is permanent. Even the position of permanent secretary is not permanent! Each of these positions is a scene. How are you acting yours? What will become of you after the scene when you are no longer in that position of authority? Examples abound in the Bible and in history of what became of some people after they left their positions of authority. Haman in the Book of Esther is a classical example. As second in command, he became worthless and died the very day he fell out of favour with King Ahasuerus. He was hung on the gallows he initially erected to hang Mordecai. His descendants were destroyed thereafter. His after-scene was so bad because of his wickedness when he was in position of authority. Apart from the “rewards” that people will give those that have left their scenes of authority, God will also bring their actions and inactions into judgment. The writer of Ecclesiastes said, “For God will bring every work into judgment, including every secret thing, whether good or evil” (12:14 NKJV. See also Psalm 58:11; 128:2; Proverbs 12:14; 13:21; Ecclesiastes 8:12; Jeremiah 17:10; Romans 14:10; Galatians 6:7-9; Ephesians 6:8; Hebrews 6:10; 13:16; Revelation 22:12). What will happen after your scene of authority? In His service, Bayo Afolaranmi (Pastor). Prayer Point: Pray that you will act your scene of authority well in a way that you will receive positive “rewards” from other people and God after you leave the scene.

Spiritual Digest for the Day 07May2017

BIBLE VERSE FOR THE DAY “Why won't God give me what I ask? Why won't he answer my prayer? If only he would go ahead and kill me! If I knew he would, I would leap for joy...” (Job 6:8-10 TEV). ****************** QUOTE FOR THE DAY It takes spiritual maturity to accept the refusal of God for one’s request especially when one is passing through unpleasant life challenges. One may think that one’s request is the best while God has a better plan than one’s best request. - Bayo Afolaranmi ******************** PRAYER/ACTION FOR THE DAY Pray for the grace to be able to accept the refusal of God for your prayer for your own good.

IF GOD DOES NOT ANSWER YOUR PRAYERS...

Dearly Beloved, IF GOD DOES NOT ANSWER YOUR PRAYERS... “Why won't God give me what I ask? Why won't he answer my prayer? If only he would go ahead and kill me! If I knew he would, I would leap for joy...” (Job 6:8-10 TEV). It is evident from the Bible and life experiences that God does not answer all prayers, even those of His righteous ones! Job was a righteous man. God, Himself, testified to this when Satan tried to accuse Job (see Job 1:8; 2:3). However, God allowed Satan to tempt Job by destroying everything Job had, including his children. Satan even “inflicted loathsome sores on Job from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head” (Job 2:7 NRSV). In his agony, Job prayed that God should kill him, at least to save him from all these suffering (see Job 6:8-10). God did not answer the prayer. To add insult to Job’s injury, his friends were accusing him and his dead children of wrongdoing against God. In spite of Job’s travail and the seeming silence of God to his plight, Job remained steadfast in his faith in God. He could still declared, “Though he slay me, yet will I hope in him” and “I know that my Redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand upon the earth” (Job 13:15; 19:25 NIV). It was as if he knew about this God’s promise: “For I know the thoughts and plans that I have for you, says the Lord, thoughts and plans for welfare and peace and not for evil, to give you hope in your final outcome” (Jeremiah 29:11 AMP). God did bless Job in multiple folds at the end of the day. Instead of doing what seemed better to Job, God did His best for him!  On many occasions, God has deliberately refused to answer the prayers of His righteous ones. These people would be bitter that God does not do what they seem good for them. It takes spiritual maturity to accept the refusal of God for one’s request especially when one is passing through unpleasant life challenges. One may think that one’s request is the best while God has a better plan than one’s best request.  If God does not answer your prayers, what would you do? Would you still remain steadfast in your faith in Him? Are you ready to take His refusal for your request in anticipation for His better plan for you?  In His service, Bayo Afolaranmi (Pastor). Prayer Point: Pray for the grace to be able to accept the refusal of God for your prayer for your own good.

DETERMINE TO BE DISTINCT!

Dearly Beloved, DETERMINE TO BE DISTINCT! “When Enoch had lived 65 years, he became the father of Methuselah. And after he became the father of Methuselah, Enoch walked with God 300 years and had other sons and daughters. Altogether, Enoch lived 365 years. Enoch walked with God; then he was no more, because God took him away” (Genesis 5:21-24 NIV). “So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking” (Ephesians 4:17 NIV). Genesis Chapter Five is one of such boring chapters in the Bible. It contains the list of people that lived and died for nothing spectacular. In this list is the story of a man that was distinct—Enoch. He lived the shortest time of all the people in the list, but he lived with a purpose, and the chroniclers of the Holy Scriptures recognized it. Twice in the less than five verses that were devoted to him, it was recorded that he walked with God for most part of his years. A Bible commentator put it thus: “[Enoch] walked in the name and fear of God, according to His will, in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord then made known; he walked by faith in the promises of God, and in the view of the Messiah, the promised seed; he walked uprightly and sincerely, as in the sight of God; he had familiar converse, and near and intimate communion with Him….” In the Bible, another phrase for “to walk” is “to live.” Enoch distinguished himself from the other people in the list by living his life for God. God rewarded him in His own way. The nature of this reward has become a subject of controversy among Bible scholars. However, what matters here is that God took note of Enoch’s distinction and rewarded him for it. God is looking for people that will distinguish themselves in this perverse world by walking with Him. He wants people that will determine to walk or live in His fear and will, walk or live in all His commandments and ordinances, walk or live by faith and total trust in Him, walk or live uprightly and sincerely, and walk or live in intimate communion with Him. He is ready to reward such people accordingly. Will you be one of such people? This year, determine to be distinct! In His service, Bayo Afolaranmi (Pastor). Prayer Point: Help me, O Lord, to be distinct to Your glory wherever I find myself.

THE BLOOD OF MARTYRS

Dearly Beloved, THE BLOOD OF MARTYRS “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much grain” (John 12:24 NKJV). As I was about to sleep recently, I checked my WhatsApp Messenger to see if there was any urgent message to be attended to (that has become my daily practice). I came across a video clip in a WhatsApp group with a subtitle “Pray for Syria”. I could not bear watching the video clip to the end as it turned out to be one of those incidents where some Christians were being beheaded one after the other by their persecutors. The horror of seeing blood gushing out of the necks of the beheaded people at the one slash of the sword/cutlass could not make me continue to watch the video clip. In fact, I blamed myself for watching such a horrendous thing when I was about to sleep that night. It was as if I never heard or even watched such awful video of Christians being slaughtered like animals before. I kept on wondering why a human being would gruesomely kill a fellow human being in the name of fighting for one god who cannot defend himself. Then I remembered the paraphrase of a statement made by an early church leader called Tertullian in 197 AD: “The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the church.” How true is this statement? Jesus Christ proverbially stated that a grain of wheat has to fall into the ground and dies before it can produce more grain (see John 12:24). He demonstrated this by dying on the cross so that mankind might have eternal life. Right from the death of first known Christian martyr, Stephen in Acts 7, to the modern-day Christian martyrs, the blood of these martyrs, in most occasions, has really become the seed of the growth of Christianity. This has been proved from history. However, I still keep wondering: must people be killed before there is growth in Christian faith? Persecution of all forms is inevitable in Christian life (see 2 Timothy 3:12). The more the Christian is persecuted or tested, the stronger he becomes in his Christian faith (see 1 Peter 1:7-9). The more Christians are killed for their faith, the more other Christians are united in prayer, and the more the spread of Christianity. Indeed, “The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the church.” Nevertheless, are you ready to lay your life down for your faith? You may not be literally killed as a martyr, but are you ready to really be a witness with your action and words for Christian faith? (Interestingly, the English word, martyr, comes from the word for witness in the original Greek!) In His service, Bayo Afolaranmi (Pastor). Prayer Points: 1. Pray that your life will truly be a “martyr” (witness) for your Christian faith and that it will contribute to the growth of Christianity in your area. 2. Pray for Christians in persecuted areas of the world that they will continue to have grace to withstand the persecutions.

BIBLE VERSE FOR THE DAY “But the angel answered and said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here; for He is risen, as He said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay” (Matthew 28:5-6 NKJV). ****************** QUOTE FOR THE DAY No other religious leader is worthy of following because they have died or will die one day. Only Jesus Christ died and is risen again. Alleluia! - Bayo Afolaranmi ******************** PRAYER/ACTION FOR THE DAY Thank God for the risen Christ and His finished work of salvation on the cross.

CHRIST THE LORD IS RISEN TODAY

Dearly Beloved, CHRIST THE LORD IS RISEN TODAY “But the angel answered and said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here; for He is risen, as He said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay” (Matthew 28:5-6 NKJV). One of the popular hymns that are always sung during Easter celebration is “CHRIST THE LORD IS RISEN TODAY” written by that great hymn writer, Charles Wesley (1708-1788) in 1739 to commemorate the resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ when He rose from the grave to conquer of death and its power. The original version of the hymn had eleven stanzas, but did not have the “Alleluias” that distinguish it today. An unknown composer later added the “Alleluias” to fit into its musical tune. There are variations in stanzas of the hymn in various hymnals available today. However, the hymn is a call to celebrate the death and especially the resurrection of Jesus Christ. An outstanding feature of the hymn is that its lyrics are written in the present tense. "Christ the Lord is risen today" – not "has risen" or "rose." This is powerful because it places us (Christians living presently) in community with those who actually witnessed the resurrection in their own lifetimes, and reaffirms our own hope of being set free from death. As “Sons of men and angels” declared the news of the risen Lord, Charles Wesley in the hymn enjoined heavens and earth to raise their joy and triumph high in celebration of the risen Lord. Charles Wesley mocked death, grave, the stone (that was rolled over the grave), the seal on the stone, and the guards for their failure to hold Jesus Christ from resurrecting. Charles Wesley talked about the redeeming work that is done and the battle that was won on the cross. As Jesus Christ soared above death and grave, so also Christians will soar where He has led being made like Him and raised like Him. Indeed, the risen Christ is to be hailed and praised. Alleluia! “Alleluia” (in Greek) or “Hallelujah” (in Hebrew) originally means, “Praise the Lord”. This word prominently leads off Psalms 106, 111, 112, 113, 117, 135 and especially the “Hallelujah Psalms” – Psalms 146-150. The word is re-echoed in Revelation 19 connoting the final victory of the saints. The word is perfectly fitted later into the lyrics of this great hymn to celebrate the risen Lord. Alleluia, Christ the Lord is indeed risen! Have you put your faith in this risen Christ, or are still following a dead or powerless leader? No other religious leader is worthy of following because they have died or will die one day. Only Jesus Christ died and is risen again. Alleluia! In His service, Bayo Afolaranmi (Pastor). Prayer Point: Thank God for the risen Christ and His finished work of salvation on the cross.

BIBLE VERSE FOR THE DAY "This is what the LORD says: ‘Let not the wise man boast of his wisdom or the strong man boast of his strength or the rich man boast of his riches, but let him who boasts boast about this: that he understands and knows me, that I am the LORD, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight,' declares the LORD" (Jeremiah 9:23-24 NIV). ****************** QUOTE FOR THE DAY Who gets the credit for your ability and power to do those good things that you are doing? Do you normally give the credit to God? Let God take the glory so that you will be able to do greater exploits for Him. – Bayo Afolaranmi ******************** PRAYER/ACTION FOR THE DAY Pray that you will have the humble heart to always remember to give God the credit for your God-given abilities.

WHO GETS THE CREDIT?

Dearly Beloved, WHO GETS THE CREDIT? "`I cannot do it,' Joseph replied to Pharaoh, `but God will give Pharaoh the answer he desires'" (Genesis 41:16 NIV). "Daniel replied, `No wise man, enchanter, magician or diviner can explain to the king the mystery he has asked about, but there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries'" (Daniel 2:27-28a NIV). God has given each one of us one or more abilities to do things. By human nature, we normally want to be praised for any good thing we have done through these abilities. We always ascribe honour to ourselves for such abilities. At times, we even try to get the credit of the good things that those around us have done. This human nature is prevalent in the life of one who has not totally surrendered his/her life to the Lordship of Jesus Christ and the leadership of the Holy Spirit. It makes people to strive for the praise and approval of men, and even make them to do all their possible best to be in charge so that people will see them as somebody that has a special ability that others do not have. This has been the bane of some sit-tight leaders that do not want to relinquish their position to other people. Joseph and Daniel were men who preferred to let God, and not themselves, get the credit for their God-given gifts. Both of them had similar situations. Pharaoh, the king of Egypt had two dreams that troubled him. He sought for the interpretation of these dreams from the Egyptian wise men and magicians, but none of them could interpret the dreams. It was then an officer remembered Joseph who could accurately interpret dreams. Joseph was brought to the presence of Pharaoh. When the king was trying to praise Joseph for his gift, Joseph quickly gave God the credit (Genesis 41:1-16). Daniel did the same thing in Daniel 2:27-28 and even refused to get any reward for this gift in Daniel 5:17. These two men humbled themselves and gave God the credit of what they could do, and God exalted each of them to high positions in foreign lands. Who gets the credit for your ability and power to do those good things that you are doing? Do you normally give the credit to God? The Bible says, "This is what the LORD says: `Let not the wise man boast of his wisdom or the strong man boast of his strength or the rich man boast of his riches, but let him who boasts boast about this: that he understands and knows me, that I am the LORD, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight,' declares the LORD" (Jeremiah 9:23-24 NIV). Surrender yourself totally to the Lordship of Jesus Christ and the leadership of the Holy Spirit to be able to do this. In His service, Bayo Afolaranmi (Pastor). Prayer Points: 1. Thank God for your God-given abilities. 2. Pray that you will have the humble heart to always remember to give God the credit for these abilities. 3. Pray that God will exalt you as you give Him the credit for the abilities.

BIBLE VERSE FOR THE DAY "'For I know the plans I have for you,' declares the LORD, 'plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you'" (Jeremiah 29:11-12 NIV). ****************** QUOTE FOR THE DAY God has plans for us - plans not to harm us, but to prosper us. Plans to give us hope. Plans to give us a good future. Plans not to abandon us even when we go astray. Plans to listen to us when we call on Him. - Bayo Afolaranmi ******************** PRAYER/ACTION FOR THE DAY Pray that the plans and purpose of God for your life will come to pass in His appointed time.

THERE IS HOPE!

Dearly Beloved, THERE IS HOPE! "'For I know the plans I have for you,' declares the LORD, 'plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you'" (Jeremiah 29:11-12 NIV). I have read this Bible passage times without numbers. I have heard people quoting it. I have even used it to preach to or encourage other people several times. However, when I studied it in its context recently, I have a clearer understanding of its real meaning. The context of the passage is a letter written by prophet Jeremiah to the exiled Jews in Babylon. Although, the people of Judah had sinned against God, and God was punishing them by sending them to exile, yet, Jeremiah was advising them to have courage and settle down in that foreign land because God had not abandoned them totally. He presented God as the Yoruba proverbial father that would punish his child with right hand and draw him in love back to himself with the left hand. No matter the consequence of one's sin, God is still compassionate and forgiving (Daniel 9:9). He has plans of restoring us back to Him. He will not abandon His own forever! The Bible passage is a word of hope for people that are suffering because of their misdeeds. It is a word of hope for others also that think that God has forgotten them. It is a word of hope for every child of God. God has plans for us - plans not to harm us, but to prosper us. Plans to give us hope. Plans to give us a good future. Plans not to abandon us even when we go astray. Plans to listen to us when we call on Him. "This is what the LORD says: 'I will restore the fortunes of Jacob's tents and have compassion on his dwellings; the city will be rebuilt on her ruins, and the palace will stand in its proper place. From them will come songs of thanksgiving and the sound of rejoicing. I will add to their numbers, and they will not be decreased; I will bring them honor, and they will not be disdained. Their children will be as in days of old, and their community will be established before me; I will punish all who oppress them. Their leader will be one of their own; their ruler will arise from among them. I will bring him near and he will come close to me, for who is he who will devote himself to be close to me?' declares the LORD. "'So you will be my people, and I will be your God'" (Jeremiah 30:18-22 NIV. See also 19:14; 31:27-28; 32:42-44; 33:6-26; Lamentations 3:31-33). No matter the situation, there is indeed hope! In His service, Bayo Afolaranmi (Pastor). Prayer Point: Pray that the plans and purpose of God for your life will come to pass in His appointed time.

BIBLE VERSE FOR THE DAY “For God will bring every work into judgment, including every secret thing, whether good or evil” (Ecclesiastes 12:14 NKJV). ****************** QUOTE FOR THE DAY It may seem as if perpetrators of evil are succeeding in their evil deeds, but God will expose them and bring them to judgment one day. - Bayo Afolaranmi ******************** PRAYER/ACTION FOR THE DAY Pray that God will arise and put an end to all the terrorist acts in the world.

GOD IS NOT SILENT!

Dearly Beloved, GOD IS NOT SILENT! “Do not keep silent, O God! Do not hold Your peace, and do not be still, O God! For behold, Your enemies make a tumult; and those who hate You have lifted up their head” (Psalm 83:1-2 NKJV). Few days ago, a terrorist jammed a car into pedestrians on Westminster Bridge in London, UK, stabbed a police officer, and attempted to enter the Houses of Parliament before the police gunned him down. Apart from the police officer and the attacker, few other numbers of people were reportedly dead while many were hospitalized due to the terrorist attack. This was not the first terrorist attack on unsuspecting innocent people in London and elsewhere in the world. The incessant attacks of Boko Haram terrorist group in northeast Nigeria and other neighboring countries are still fresh in one’s memory. At times, I wonder what these terrorists derive from these murderous and suicide attacks. As a student of peace studies, I have learnt that apart from reasons associated with ethno-nationalism, alienation/discrimination, socio-economic status, political grievances, and accidental insurgent, religion has been the major reason for terrorism. Most terrorist attacks have been carried out with religious undertone. It has been as if these terrorists are seemingly fighting for their religion and, funnily, for the founder and the god of their religion. The fact that the Almighty God is seemingly silent and allows most of these terrorist attacks to be successful makes these heartless people and their collaborators think that they are fighting a just cause. Like many other people, even today, the psalmist in Psalm 83 thought that God is silent to these nefarious acts against humanity and people of God. He, therefore, prayed that God should arise and fight against these enemies of progress. However, God is NOT silent. In His goodness and longsuffering, He is yearning that these heartless people come to repentance. Apostle Paul said, “Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance?” (Romans 2:4 NKJV. See also 2 Peter 3:9). It may seem as if these perpetrators of evil are succeeding in their evil deeds. However, God will expose them and bring them to judgment one day. The writer of Ecclesiastes said: “For God will bring every work into judgment, including every secret thing, whether good or evil” (12:14 NKJV. See also 3:17; 11:9; Psalm 96:13; Matthew 10:26; Romans 2:16; 1 Corinthians 4:5; 2 Corinthians 5:10; Revelation 20:11-15). It may seem as if God is silent now. God is not silent. Are you a terrorist or collaborator of terrorists? God is not silent. Are you a victim of terrorism or any form of evil perpetration? God is not silent. Have you been praying that God should bring an end to all these evils in the world? God is not silent. He will act one day. Nonetheless, when He is acting in judgment, will He commend you or condemn you? Remember, “It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God” (Hebrews 10:31 NKJV). God is not silent! In His service, Bayo Afolaranmi (Pastor). Prayer Point: Pray that God will arise and put an end to all the terrorist acts in the world.

Spiritual Digest for the Day 19Mar2017

BIBLE VERSE FOR THE DAY “Don’t worry about anything, but pray about everything. With thankful hearts offer up your prayers and requests to God. Then, because you belong to Christ Jesus, God will bless you with peace that no one can completely understand. And this peace will control the way you think and feel” (Philippians 4:6-7 CEV). ****************** QUOTE FOR THE DAY You may not be able to do anything about the problem of your life, but you have a caring God who is ready to listen to you and give you His peace when you pray to and put your trust in Him, then why worry? - Bayo Afolaranmi ******************** PRAYER/ACTION FOR THE DAY Pray that you will not worry, but always pray to and put your trust in God no matter the problem of your life.

…THEN WHY WORRY?

Dearly Beloved, …THEN WHY WORRY? “Don’t worry about anything, but pray about everything. With thankful hearts offer up your prayers and requests to God. Then, because you belong to Christ Jesus, God will bless you with peace that no one can completely understand. And this peace will control the way you think and feel” (Philippians 4:6-7 CEV). Recently I received a video clip through one of my WhatsApp groups that is very inspiring to me. In the clip, a man humorously presented a timeless truth about worry by rhetorically asking some questions. Let me try to transcribe part of his presentation: “Do you have a problem in life? No. Then why worry? Do you have a problem in life? Yes. Can you do something about it? Yes. Then why worry? Do you have a problem in life? Yes. Can you do something about it? No. Then why worry?” The presentation may sound humorous, but it is something that one should ponder about. Why worry for a problem that does not exist? Why worry for a problem that you can do something about? Above all, why worry about a problem that you cannot directly do something about? Then why worry? That presenter did not complete the timeless truth about worry. One may not worry about non-existent problem, a problem that one can easily find solution to, or most especially a problem that one cannot solve by oneself. However, there are antidotes for worry: prayer and faith. Anyone who can pray to and have faith in God will not worry, but have peace of mind in spite of the problem. There are many biblical injunctions in support of this. Apart from Philippians 4:6-7 (quoted above); Psalm 23:4; 56:3; Proverbs 3:5-6; 12:25; Matthew 11:28-30; Luke 12:24-34; John 14:27; Romans 8:38; Colossians 3:15; 2 Thessalonians 3:16; Hebrews 13:5-6 and many other Bible verses, consider these verses quoted below: “I tell you not to worry about your life. Don’t worry about having something to eat, drink, or wear. Isn’t life more than food or clothing? ...Can worry make you live longer? 28 Why worry about clothes? ...Don’t worry and ask yourselves, ‘Will we have anything to eat? Will we have anything to drink? Will we have any clothes to wear?’...Don’t worry about tomorrow. It will take care of itself. You have enough to worry about today” (Matthew 6:25-34 CEV). “Our Lord, we belong to you. We tell you what worries us, and you won’t let us fall” (Psalm 55:22 CEV). “Be humble in the presence of God’s mighty power, and he will honor you when the time comes. God cares for you, so turn all your worries over to him” (1 Peter 5:6-7 CEV). You may not be able to do anything about the problem of your life, but you have a caring God who is ready to listen to you and give you His peace when you pray to and put your trust in Him, then why worry? In His service, Bayo Afolaranmi (Pastor). Prayer Point: Pray that you will not worry, but always pray to and put your trust in God no matter the problem of your life.

Spiritual Digest for the Day 12Mar2017

BIBLE VERSE FOR THE DAY “But where sin abounded, grace abounded much more.... What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Certainly not!” (Romans 5:20b, 6:1-2a NKJV). ****************** QUOTE FOR THE DAY Grace may be far greater than any sin, it is never a license to sin. We cannot continue in sin and expect that the grace of God will abound. – Bayo Afolaranmi ******************** PRAYER/ACTION FOR THE DAY Pray that the grace of God will abound in your life, and that you will not misuse this grace.

GRACE GREATER THAN OUR SIN

Dearly Beloved, GRACE GREATER THAN OUR SIN “Moreover the law entered that the offense might abound. But where sin abounded, grace abounded much more, so that as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 5:20-21 NKJV). What is grace? Simply, grace is unmerited favour granted by God to undeserving sinners that come to Him through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. This grace, which is a key concept in the Christian faith, is far greater than the sinners’ sins (see Roman 5:20-21). This is the message that Julia Harriet Johnston (1849-1919) communicated in her popular hymn, GRACE GREATER THAN OUR SIN. Julia was a daughter of a Presbyterian minister. She was very active in Sunday school in her church also in the Presbyterian Missionary Society of Peoria, Illinois, USA. Julia Johnston saw this grace as a marvelous one of a loving God. In spite of the fact that man’s sin makes him guilty before God, and this makes man to be in despair and tries to come to God on his terms, the grace is far greater than any sin or guilt that anyone may have. It is the product of the blood of Jesus Christ shed on the cross of Calvary. The blood washes away every stain of sin and makes the sinner white as snow. Julia underscored that this grace is marvelous, infinite and matchless, and it is freely bestowed on all who believe in Jesus Christ. Having highlighted the entrance of sin into mankind through Adam that brought about judgment, and the righteousness that came through the obedience of Jesus Christ, Apostle Paul hinted that the grace of God is far greater than the sin (see Romans 5:12-21). Without this grace, no one can be saved. Only those that come through faith to God through Jesus Christ can have it. It is not by human efforts (see Ephesians 2:5-10). However, grace may be far greater than any sin, it is never a license to sin. Apostle Paul emphatically said that we cannot continue in sin and expect that the grace of God will abound (see Romans 6:1-2). The fact that we have the grace of God should make us to strive to live a sinless life. Anyone that has had the grace of God will not continue to sin (see 1 John 3:7-9). What a great opportunity we have: to have a grace that is far greater than our sins! However, do you have this grace? Remember, it is an undeserved favour that you can have through faith in Jesus Christ. Or, are you still trying to get it through your human efforts? You are invited to receive this grace. Have you yielded this invitation? In His service, Bayo Afolaranmi (Pastor). Prayer Point: Pray that the grace of God will abound in your life, and that you will not misuse this grace.

BIBLE VERSE FOR THE DAY "Son of man, these men have set up idols in their hearts and put wicked stumbling blocks before their faces" (Ezekiel 14:3 NIV). ****************** QUOTE FOR THE DAY Anything you like or love more than God is an idol of your heart. Remove them now and put God in His right position in your heart. - Bayo Afolaranmi ******************** PRAYER/ACTION FOR THE DAY Pray that you will be able to remove all the idols that are taking the place of God in heart.

IDOLS OF THE HEART

Dearly Beloved, IDOLS OF THE HEART "You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God" (Exodus 20:4-5 NIV). "Son of man, these men have set up idols in their hearts and put wicked stumbling blocks before their faces" (Ezekiel 14:3 NIV). The primitive Africa was full of idolatry. The more I like the African culture, the more I hate its connection with idolatry. I thank God that I have been saved from all these ancestral idols. In Christ, I can be a true African without being idolatrous. However, while I have done away with all the physical idols, what of the unseen idols of the heart? Am I free from them? God accused the exiled Israelites of idolatry of the heart. Though they were sent into exile because of this sin, they continued in it in the exile. Interestingly, these people still wanted to hear from God, which meant that they probably did not realize that they had set up idols in their hearts against God's will. I doubt if you still have any physical idol that you are worshipping. Nevertheless, what are the idols in your heart? What are the things that have taken the place of God in your heart? Is it money, occupation, time, sports, pleasure, reputation, position, your children, your spouse, or even your life? Anything you like or love more than God is an idol of your heart. Remove them now and put God in His right position in your heart. In His service, Bayo Afolaranmi (Pastor). Prayer Point: Pray that you will be able to remove all the idols that are taking the place of God in heart.

Spiritual Digest for the Day 26Feb2017

BIBLE VERSE FOR THE DAY “For from you the word of the Lord has sounded forth, not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place. Your faith toward God has gone out, so that we do not need to say anything” (1 Thessalonians 1:8 NKJV). ****************** QUOTE FOR THE DAY While many people may not see you or live with you to assess your character, your broadcasts on social media go a long way to portray who you are, and they serve as veritable tools to tell the world about the Gospel message. - Bayo Afolaranmi ******************** PRAYER/ACTION FOR THE DAY Pray that you will be able to use the social media in commendable ways by broadcasting inspiring messages especially the Gospel message.

WHAT ARE YOU BROADCASTING?

Dearly Beloved, WHAT ARE YOU BROADCASTING? “For from you the word of the Lord has sounded forth, not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place. Your faith toward God has gone out, so that we do not need to say anything” (1 Thessalonians 1:8 NKJV). The accessibility of online social media (like Facebook, WhatsApp Messenger, BlackBerry Messenger, Twitter, LinkedIn, Telegram, Instagram, imo, Tango, Skype and the likes) through mobile phones, computers and other Internet-enabled tools has made it very easy for many people to become broadcasters without any journalistic training. Any information can become viral and get to the uttermost part of the world in a matter of minutes through these social media as people forward such message from one source to the other without verifying its authenticity. The fact that many mobile phones and other mobile technological tools have in-built cameras and voice recorders makes it easy to record audio messages and/or video occurrences and transmit such to other people instantly. This indeed is a good and welcome development. However, what are you broadcasting through these social media? Apostle Paul in his first epistle to the Christians in Thessalonica commended them for “broadcasting” the word of God to every place around them (see 1:8). These were people that were at risk for accepting the Gospel (see 1:6). They lived when the Gospel message was not popular: a message that seemed foolish to the common people then (see Acts 17:1-15; 1 Corinthians 1:18). In spite of this, the message became viral through the Thessalonians to other places. The lives and words of these Christians in Thessalonica became the “social media” through which the word of God was “broadcast” to other people. Again, what are you broadcasting through social media? Are they unconfirmed news/alert, useless jokes, pornographic pictures/video clips, politics, sports, job alerts, or the Gospel message? What are you known for on social media? The types of posts/messages you “like” and/or make comment about (which you are actually indirectly broadcasting) and the types of posts/messages that you directly broadcast/rebroadcast on social media will also determine who really you are and what you are “broadcasting” to the world. While many people may not see you or live with you to assess your character, your broadcasts on social media go a long way to portray who you are, and they serve as veritable tools to tell the world about the Gospel message. Will you be commended or condemned for what you are broadcasting on social media? What are you broadcasting? In His service, Bayo Afolaranmi (Pastor). Prayer Point: Pray that you will be able to use the social media in commendable ways by broadcasting inspiring messages especially the Gospel message.

Spiritual Digest for the Day 19Feb2017

BIBLE VERSE FOR THE DAY “For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified” (1 Corinthians 2:2 NKJV). ****************** QUOTE FOR THE DAY I need no other argument, I need no other plea, It is enough that Jesus died, and that He died for me. - Eliza Edmunds Hewitt ******************** PRAYER/ACTION FOR THE DAY Pray that you will wholeheartedly accept the efficacy of the death of Jesus Christ over your life.

I NEED NO OTHER ARGUMENT

Dearly Beloved, I NEED NO OTHER ARGUMENT “For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified” (1 Corinthians 2:2 NKJV). On what or who do you base your faith? This is a question that one should answer meditatively. Many people base their faith on their ancestral culture or tradition. Many people base their faith on one creed or the other. Many people base their faith on a hero. Many people base their faith on an idol or god. Many people base their faith on the Supreme Being called God. Even many people prefer to relate with the Supreme Being through other lesser gods or angels. Interestingly, many people would claim that they do not believe in anything or any Being. For Eliza Edmunds Hewitt (pseudonym: Lidie H. Edmunds) (1851-1920), she believed in no other thing or person, but in “the ever living One” who died not only for her, but also for the whole humanity. This “ever living One” is no other person than Jesus Christ. She expressly stated in one of her hymns that she needed no other argument or plea. Faith based on any other thing or person is useless because, “there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12 NKJV) except through the name of Jesus Christ (see verses 10-11). Apostle Paul simply said, “For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified” (1 Corinthians 2:2 NKJV). In the hymn “I NEED NO OTHER ARGUMENT” (known also as “MY FAITH HAS FOUND A RESTING PLACE”), Eliza E. Hewitt really found a resting place in Jesus Christ because Jesus Christ has died for her to save her, and this has put an end to her fear and doubt. Our faith can only find a resting place in Jesus Christ because He offers us rest (see Matthew 11:28-30; Hebrews 4:3). There can be no other means to find such a rest. Jesus Christ declared: “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you” (John 14:27 NKJV). Jesus Christ demonstrated this, as Eliza E. Hewitt rightly noted in her hymn, by healing the sick, by saving the lost, and by never casting away anyone that comes to Him. Who among religious leaders of this world can do these things? Indeed, there is no other argument! Base your faith on Jesus Christ if you want a resting place from all the confusion in the world. He has said, “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light” (Matthew 11:28-30 NKJV). In His service, Bayo Afolaranmi (Pastor). Prayer Point: Pray that you will wholeheartedly accept the efficacy of the death of Jesus Christ over your life, and willingly come to Him for the lasting rest. Spiritual Digest for the Day 12Feb2017

BIBLE VERSE FOR THE DAY "This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers" (1 John 3:16 NIV). ****************** QUOTE FOR THE DAY Anyone that would want to celebrate the Valentine’s Day must be ready to do anything, even death, for his/her loved one. The celebration must be with a sacrificial love. That is the real Valentine. Happy Valentine’s Day in advance! - Bayo Afolaranmi ******************** PRAYER/ACTION FOR THE DAY Pray that you will be able to have the sacrificial love that can make you to be ready to die for your loved ones.

THE REAL VALENTINE

Dearly Beloved, THE REAL VALENTINE "This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers" (1 John 3:16 NIV). "Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends" (John 15:13 NIV). Valentine’s Day is an annual celebration held on February 14 to commemorate love and affection between intimate companions. It is traditionally a day on which lovers express their love for each other by presenting gifts like flowers, and other gifts, sending greeting cards and love text messages (SMS) and even love phone calls. There are many traditions about the origin and widespread acceptance of this celebration. From these traditions, there were some people that were coincidentally named Valentine between third and fourth centuries AD that were killed because of their love-related actions. As this celebration is observed every year, how many of the people that believe in it and celebrate it are ready to lay down their lives for their so-called loved ones? Many people are preoccupied with the material or financial gifts they will give or get during the celebration. Many have even turned the celebration to a time of satisfying their sexual and lustful desires. The men bearing the name Valentine in the olden days that made us to be celebrating the Valentine’s Day annually were known for their sacrificial love. They had a love that cost them even their lives for their loved ones. There is Somebody who sacrificially loves. He is the supreme Valentine of all time. He is the Lord Jesus Christ who because of His love for mankind "did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death - even death on a cross! (Philippians 2:6-8 NIV). Anyone that would want to celebrate the Valentine’s Day must be ready to do anything, even death, for his/her loved one. The celebration must be with a sacrificial love. That is the real Valentine. Happy Valentine’s Day in advance! In His service, Bayo Afolaranmi (Pastor). Prayer Point: Pray that you will be able to have the sacrificial love that can make you to be ready to die for your loved ones.
