KEEP GOING!

Dearly Beloved KEEP GOING! Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God” (Hebrews 12:1-2 NKJV). I was touched by the life history of a visiting lecturer that was the leading facilitator in a week-long intensive course on conflict resolution lessons where I did one of my postgraduate studies. He was born and raised in one of the major violent conflict-affected areas in the world. According to him, because he was determined to be educated, he had to go to school during this violent conflict. One of the instructions that his mother used to give him every morning is, “No matter what you see or hear, do not look left or right. Keep going!” This particular instruction kept him going despite the violence and effects of violence around him until he completed his education in that conflict-inflicted area. He recalled the incidents of bombings, killings, and maiming of people around him, including his contemporaries. However, despite these, because of his focus to be educated, his mother’s instruction every morning - “Keep going!” - kept him going. Today, he is an associate professor in one of the most reputed universities in the world. The writer of the epistle to the Hebrews gave a similar instruction. Many persecutions surrounded the early Hebrew Christians. They were being distracted in their faith in Jesus Christ, and they contemplated going back to Judaism. Having highlighted the supremacy of Jesus Christ above the angels, the Mosaic Law, the Levitical priesthood, the sacrifices and offerings that are associated with the priesthood, and later the exploits of some men and women of faith, the writer advised his audience to keep going by fixing their eyes on Jesus Christ who was their focus. Jesus was saying a similar thing when He told someone that wanted to follow Him with divided attention: "No one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God" (Luke 9:62 NKJV). Keep going! This instruction is very relevant for anyone that wants to succeed in life. No matter what may be going on around you, keep going! Be focused! Do not let anything distract you from your goal. Victory is yours in Jesus’ name. Amen. As a Christian, do not be distracted by anything from following Jesus Christ in this world. Keep your eyes on Jesus Christ, NOT these distractions, even if they seem to be good. In His service, Bayo Afolaranmi (Pastor). Prayer Point: Lord, help me keep going despite the distracting situation around me.

Spiritual Digest for the Day 22May2022

BIBLE VERSE FOR THE DAY “Now when He was in Jerusalem at the Passover, during the feast, many believed in His name when they saw the signs which He did. But Jesus did not commit Himself to them, because He knew all men, and had no need that anyone should testify of man, for He knew what was in man” (John 2:23-25 NKJV). *********** QUOTE FOR THE DAY Not everyone singing your praise or seemingly loyal to you has your interest at heart. Many people are loyal to people in a leadership position because of what they can get from the leaders. Only discerning people will act wisely and do not allow sycophants to deceive them with their false praises. Beware of sycophants! - Bayo Afolaranmi ************ PRAYER/ACTION FOR THE DAY Pray for a discerning spirit to know people that are praising you falsely and act wisely with them.

BEWARE OF SYCOPHANTS!

Dearly Beloved, BEWARE OF SYCOPHANTS! “Now when He was in Jerusalem at the Passover, during the feast, many believed in His name when they saw the signs which He did. But Jesus did not commit Himself to them, because He knew all men, and had no need that anyone should testify of man, for He knew what was in man” (John 2:23-25 NKJV). A dictionary defines a sycophant as “a person who tries to please someone in order to gain a personal advantage.” Such a person is not reliable, but only the discerning ones would discover him/her and relate with him/her accordingly. Gullible people easily fall into the deceit of sycophants and later regret such action. Jesus Christ knew this well, and He did not allow people to mislead Him by their eye services. Twice, in the Gospel of John, Jesus Christ did not entrust Himself to the people. On the first occasion, during a Passover festival in Jerusalem, many people started following Him, but He knew who they were (see John 2:23-25). On another occasion, because of the miraculous signs that Jesus Christ did, many people began to praise Him as the expected Prophet. They even intended to make Him their king forcefully. However, He withdrew from them and went to another place (see John 6:14-15). Interestingly, the crowd in Jerusalem that honoured Jesus Christ as He rode triumphantly on a donkey into Jerusalem (see John 12:12-18) were the ones less than a week later crying “Crucify him! Crucify him!” They opted for the release of a criminal and insisted that Jesus Christ should be crucified (see Luke 23:13-25). This is a great lesson for everyone, especially those in a leadership position. Not everyone singing your praise or seemingly loyal to you has your interest at heart. Many people are loyal to people in a leadership position because of what they can get from the leaders. Only discerning people will act wisely and do not allow sycophants to deceive them with their false praises. People that are shouting “Hosanna” today may cry, “Crucify him! Crucify him!” tomorrow. Beware of sycophants! In His service, Bayo Afolaranmi (Pastor). Prayer Point: Pray for a discerning spirit to know people that are praising you falsely and act wisely with them.

It takes faith and patience to enjoy the promises of God. SHOULD ONE BE AFRAID OF THOSE WHO KILL?

Dearly Beloved, SHOULD ONE BE AFRAID OF THOSE WHO KILL? “And I say to you, My friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear Him who, after He has killed, has power to cast into hell; yes, I say to you, fear Him!” (Luke 12:4-5 NKJV). The brutal killing of Deborah Samuel Yakubu is highly condemnable! The 200-level student of a college of education in Sokoto State, Nigeria was accused of an alleged blasphemy against the tenets of Islam. Why would a man kill another fellow man for religious purposes? Why would a mortal man attempt to defend the immortal God? Either the “God” is powerless and needs His creation to defend Him, or the overzealous religious man has a thwarted concept of the invincible God. Nevertheless, the thrust of my message this week is not about these heartless people that are eager to fight for their “God” at any slight provocation. These callous people might have been doing, and are still doing, their worst in maiming and killing people in the name of religion. These people can only kill the body, as Deborah Samuel Yakubu was killed some days ago. They are not to be feared because that is the worst they can do. They have no other power over the eternal destiny of the soul of the people they have killed. The One to really be feared is the One – the Almighty God – who can kill and have the power to determine the eternal destination of a person even after the death of the person! The people that are seemingly defending their “God” are not sure of what will become of them when they die. Conversely, the genuine Christians that are martyred are sure of where they are going. The reason is that they (the genuine Christians) serve the all-powerful God. This God does not need any defence. He has assured everyone who believes in Him a place of eternal rest in heaven. That is the One to be afraid of. Deborah Samuel Yakubu, and other Christian martyrs, might have died because of their faith in Jesus Christ. That does not mean one should be afraid of their killers. The killers can only kill their bodies. That is all! As long as we are in this world, such killers will continue to exist and do their worst. However, the killers should know that they will give an account of every soul they kill when they get back to their Maker. Unfortunately, it will be too late for them to repent then. Therefore, be afraid of the Almighty God who can kill and even determine your final destination in heaven. Do not be a heartless killer (and destroyer of people’s destinies in any way) because of any cause! For genuine Christians, do not be afraid of those who can kill only the body. In His service, Bayo Afolaranmi (Pastor). Prayer Point: Pray that you will not be afraid of those who can only kill your body, but that you will be afraid of the Almighty God who can kill and determine your eternal destiny. NB: This message is dedicated to the late Deborah Samuel Yakubu, a 200-level student of a college of education in Sokoto State, Nigeria, who was beaten, stoned, and burnt to death on May 12, 2022, for alleged blasphemy against the tenets of Islam.

BIBLE VERSE FOR THE DAY “A capable, intelligent, and virtuous woman — who is he who can find her? She is far more precious than jewels and her value is far above rubies or pearls” (Proverbs 31:10 AMP). *********** QUOTE FOR THE DAY Virtuous mothers deserve more honour. It is not too much if every day is dedicated to celebrating them. Happy Mother’s Day! - Bayo Afolaranmi ************ PRAYER/ACTION FOR THE DAY Thank God for all virtuous mothers throughout the world. MOTHERS DESERVE MORE HONOUR!

Dearly Beloved, MOTHERS DESERVE MORE HONOUR! “A capable, intelligent, and virtuous woman — who is he who can find her? She is far more precious than jewels and her value is far above rubies or pearls” (Proverbs 31:10 AMP). Mother’s Day is a celebration honouring mothers and motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society. It is celebrated on various days in many parts of the world, most commonly in March (in most European countries and especially by the Roman Catholics and some Protestant denominations) or May (in the United States of America and among many Evangelical denominations). Because these various countries and denominations have influences on the African Christians, the Day is celebrated at least twice in many African nations around the months of March and May. A friend on Facebook jokingly posted on his Facebook wall some time ago that the honour for mothers is too much and asked why two days should be dedicated for them in a year. To him, if care is not taken, women will ask for more days of celebration in their honour. The post might be a joke, but I replied to him that mothers indeed deserve more days of honour in a year. My mother was superb when it comes to taking care of her husband, children, grandchildren, relatives, and even other people she had contact with. I can never forget her. My wife is more than excellent when it comes to exhibiting the virtues of motherhood. She demonstrates this even to the livestock we used to rear at home. My daughter has been showing the enviable traits of motherhood as early as tn years of age! Almost all my sisters, female cousins, nieces, and intimate female friends have these virtues in considerable degrees. I thank God for their lives! Indeed, mothers deserve more honour. It is not too much if every day is dedicated to celebrating them. However, not every mother deserves this honour, because there are some worthless women that care less about their children. They do not have the virtues enumerated in Proverbs 31:10-31. Their husbands and children cannot praise them because of who they are and what they have done (and is still doing). Are you such a mother? Virtuous mothers deserve more honour. Happy Mother’s Day! In His service, Bayo Afolaranmi (Pastor). Prayer Points: Thank God for all virtuous mothers throughout the world. Pray that the Lord will honor them for all their sacrifices to their husbands, children and others.
