DO YOUR OWN PART!

Dearly Beloved, DO YOUR OWN PART! "So Joshua fought the Amalekites as Moses had ordered…. As long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites were winning, but whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalekites were winning. When Moses' hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up… so that his hands remained steady till sunset. So Joshua overcame the Amalekite army with the sword" (Exodus 17:10-13 NIV). One of the favourite songs of the Baptist Women Missionary Union of Nigeria goes thus: "If we work together, Together, together; If we work together, the happier we’ll be. Your work and my work, our work for the Lord; If we work together, the happier we’ll be." An incident that happened to the people of Israel as they were going from Egypt, their land of slavery, to Canaan, their promised land, corroborates this. On their way, the Amalekites decided to waylay them. There was no reason given for this attack. Moses, however, rose to the task by sending Joshua and some men to go and fight the Amalekites. He also decided to do his own part in the battle by going up a mountain to intercede for them. Joshua led the fighting men to battle against the Amalekite army. Moses also led two other people, Aaron and Hur, to a mountain where he interceded for the fighting men. As long as he raised his hands, the Israelites were winning, but the Amalekites would be winning whenever he lowered his hands. It came to a point where he was tied. Aaron and Hur then did their own part in finding a seat for Moses and helping him to raise his hands, ensuring that the Israelites eventually had total victory. Five different kinds of people did their own parts to give the Israelites success: 1) Joshua that heeded the order of Moses in choosing and leading the fighting men; 2) the choosing men that did the fighting; 3) Moses that went to intercede for them; 4) Aaron and Hur that held Moses’ hands when he was tired; and 5) God that gave the victory. The role of none of these people can be underestimated. Likewise, the motto of the union referred to above is relevant here: "For we are God's fellow-workers; you are God's field, God's building" (1 Corinthians 3:9 NIV). God has extended the invitation to work with Him to us. Have you responded to the invitation? It may be in your local church, in a ministry like this one, or in any other place. Are you doing your own part? No matter how small or insignificant your part may be, do your own part, and do it faithfully. In His service, Bayo Afolaranmi (Pastor). Prayer Point: Pray that you will always do your part faithfully wherever you find yourself, no matter how small or insignificant it may be.

WHAT WILL BE THE OUTCOME OF THIS ELECTION?

Dearly Beloved, WHAT WILL BE THE OUTCOME OF THIS ELECTION? “Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles” (Acts 1:26 NIV). After the death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus Christ, the apostles and other followers of Jesus Christ gathered in the upper room at Jerusalem. Under the leadership of Simon Peter, they decided to elect another person to replace Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve apostles, who betrayed Jesus and later committed suicide. A guideline was given as to who the elected person would be. Two people were proposed: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias. The disciples earnestly prayed for whom they would elect from these two people. After their prayers, they cast lots, which fell to Matthias. The election outcome was that Matthias was added to the eleven apostles, and the ministry continued (see Acts of Apostles 1:12-26). There was no rancour of any kind. In fact, the next record was the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost (see Acts of Apostles 2). In less than a week, the people of Nigeria will go to the poll to elect another executive president of the nation to take over from the incumbent president after the expiration of his tenure by May 29, 2023. Out of many candidates officially seeking to be elected to the exalted position, only three are prominent. There have been campaigns of all sorts for themselves and against each other among these three major contenders and their followers. The scarcity of premium motor spirit (commonly called petrol) and money to be spent by the populace owing to the bad implementation of new currencies make life very difficult for the commoner in the country. People have been protesting violently, thereby threatening the peaceful coexistence of people. There are even apprehensions about the possibility of conducting the elections in such an uncomfortable situation. Will the election still be held in this ugly situation? If yes, what will indeed be the outcome of the election? For Nigerians eligible to vote, your right is to go and cast your vote on Election Day. Collect your permanent voter's card (PVC) (if you have not done so). Vote wisely, rightly and as your conscience leads you. Do not base your vote on any sentiment. Conduct yourselves civilly as you exercise your civic duty. Do not be involved in any activity that will breach the peace of your community. For the candidates and their supporters, know that only one person will be declared elected as the next executive president of Nigeria. Losers should take the result in good faith. Do not resort to violence of any kind. Election tribunal is there to redress any grievance. The outcome of this election in Nigeria will determine the progress or otherwise of the country. What will be the outcome of this election? In His service, Bayo Afolaranmi (Pastor). Prayer Requests: I call on all lovers of good governance, especially Christians worldwide, to pray for Nigeria and Nigerians as we make this vital decision. Pray for peace and tranquillity before, during, and after the election. Pray for the safety of the lives of electoral officials as they conduct this election. Pray that they will really be impartial in this exercise.

Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. CONTACT WITHOUT CONTAMINATION

Dearly Beloved, CONTACT WITHOUT CONTAMINATION “Now Dinah the daughter of Leah, whom she had borne to Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land. And when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the country, saw her, he took her and lay with her, and violated her” (Genesis 34:1-2 NKJV). Dinah, in Genesis 34, was the only daughter of Jacob and Leah. The other siblings were male. Her story was a pathetic one. She desired to have contact with women of her society. The contact became her ruin as she was raped by one of the noble young men of the society. There have been arguments among Bible scholars about the innocence or otherwise of Dinah in the scenario she found herself. Since Christians live in the world, the question now arises: how can they have contact with their society without being contaminated with the society? Christians indeed are in the world but are not of the world. A Christian that the world will not contaminate in spite of his contact with the world must have the reality of self-identification that he is not of the world (John 17:16). Christians “are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light” (1 Peter 2:9 NKJV. See also Revelation 1:5). Christians are salts and lights in and of the world (Matthew 5:13-16). They should influence the world with their saltiness and light. The world should not influence or contaminate them. Another related thing is that a Christian that would not want to be contaminated in the world in spite of his contact with the world will be selective in his association of the people of the world. Paul questioned: “Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? And what accord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever? And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God” (2 Corinthians 6:14-16 NKJV). An adage says, “Show me your friends and I will tell you who you are.” Dinah associated herself with the heathen women in her society, and she paid dearly for it. Who are you associating with? Who are your friends? Jesus Christ is our perfect Example. He came to this sinful world, and the world did not contaminate him in spite of His contact with the world. He knew who He is, and He was selective in who He associated with. If He could do it, you also can. Determine to “contaminate” the world with your Christian and godly lifestyle, and not to be contaminated by the world. Determine to set the pace for the world, not copying everything that the world is doing. Have contact with the world without being contaminated! In His service, Bayo Afolaranmi (Pastor). Prayer Point: Help me, O Lord, that I will not be contaminated by the world in my contact with the world.

DO NOT BE A RUMORMONGER!

Dearly Beloved, DO NOT BE A RUMORMONGER! “Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body” (Ephesians 4:25 NIV). Nigerians are about going to the polls to elect new set of political leaders to lead the country both at national and state levels for the next four years. Undoubtedly, access to social media has made dissemination of information easier these days. However, this has made many people out of falsehood, deceit, pretense, inferiority complex, identity theft, plagiarism, and the likes to mislead others by what they disseminate through social media. This trend has led to ascribing information to renowned religious or political leaders to give credence to such information. Recently, a leading famous religious leader had to release an official statement to refute a message credited to him. Unfortunately, this opportunity of easy access to social media in disseminating information has made other people to disseminate further the misleading, untrue, semi-true or even sensitive information to other people without verifying the authenticity of the source of the information. Some people are even ready to argue blindly in support of such baseless information. In Ephesians 4:25, Apostle Paul admonished, “Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body” (NIV). Apostle John added: “Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world” (1 John 4:1 NIV). Although the admonition here was about false spirits, however, it is applicable also to false information. Furthermore, God warned the people of Israel in Exodus 23:2: “Do not follow the crowd in doing wrong” (NIV). Therefore, why would you be involved in disseminating misleading, untrue, semi-true or sensitive information to other people? Why would you not first verify any information before forwarding it to others? While it is good to be informed and let other people benefit from the information you have, be mindful the information you will disseminate to other people. It is better to be sure of the source of any information and its veracity before passing such information to others. Do not be a rumormonger! In His service, Bayo Afolaranmi (Pastor).
