DOING THE IMPOSSIBLE

DOING THE IMPOSSIBLE
“‘Come,’ [Jesus] said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came towards Jesus” (Matthew 14:29 NIV).
Miracles are extraordinary events manifesting divine intervention in human affairs. They are what we consider impossible. Most of the miracles are God’s clever responses to impossible situations. It is a fact that God will not come down from heaven to do any miracle. He uses people. At times, the people that He uses are the very ones that the miracles will happen in their lives. This was what happened in the narrative that was found in Matthew 14:25-33. Two people (Jesus and Peter) did something that is impossible: walking on water. One may not be surprised that Jesus walked on water. After all, He is the Lord over everything. However, for Peter, an ordinary man, to do the impossible by walking on water he had to do some things that are worthy of note.
The first thing that Peter did was that he recognized the Lordship of Jesus (verses 25-28a). Earlier, when the other disciples with Peter saw Jesus Christ walking on turbulent water at night, they thought that Jesus was a “ghost.” Jesus had to reassure them that it was He. Peter later addressed Jesus as “Lord.” Many people also do not recognize Jesus as the Lord because of the circumstances around them.
The second thing that Peter did was that he took initiative (verse 28b). He saw Jesus doing the impossible, and he took the initiative of asking Jesus to ask him also to do the same thing. Our heavenly Father knows what we need, but He wants us to take the initiative of asking Him for them (see Matthew 6:8). No wonder, Jesus asked Peter to come to Him after Peter had taken the initiative.
The third thing that Peter did was that he was ready to leave his comfort zone (that is, the comfort of the boat) (verse 29a). In spite of the fact that the boat was been buffeted by the waves, it was safer to be in the boat than to be out of the boat on the water. Psychologically, leaving the other disciples behind in the boat would have been a problem for Peter, but he did not consider that. Anyone that will do the impossible will be ready to leave his/her comfort zone regardless of anything that might cost him/her. Such a person will not be satisfied with the average situation he/she finds him/herself.
Are you ready to do the impossible of walking on the trouble water of your life? Then be ready to do these three highlighted things. More of what Peter did to do the impossible will be highlighted next week.

NOT MY WILL
“Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, ‘My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will’” (Matthew 26:39 NIV).
Some weeks ago, I posted a message of warning about our prayer requests based on the experience of Hezekiah when he was not ready to accept the absolute will of God for his life. Most of the people that reacted to the message agreed with me, while some, expectedly, disagreed with me on the warning. The point of the people that disagreed with the message is that, as Hezekiah did, one can ask God for what one seems best for oneself. These people based their argument on man’s free will and the fact that God is a merciful God who is ready to do whatever we ask Him.
It is a fact that man has the free will to decide and ask for anything from God, after all, God said in many places in the Bible that we should ask and He would answer us (see Jeremiah 33:3; 29:12; Deuteronomy 4:29; Psalm 50:15; 91:15; 145:18; Isaiah 55:6-7; 65:24; Matthew 7:7-11; 21:22; Luke 11:9-10; John 14:13-14; 16:24). However, we must remember that God would not answer our prayers if they are not according to His will. Apostle John declared: “This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us” (1 John 5:14 NIV. Compare these passages also: 1 John 3:22; James 4:3; John 15:7; Jeremiah 29:13).
Humanly speaking, one would tend to support Hezekiah in his prayers in 2 Kings 20:2-3 and Isaiah 38:2-3. However, I will recommend the example of the prayer of our Lord Jesus Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane (Matthew 26:39-42). Both of them had the opportunities of knowing the absolute will of God for their lives at those points in their lives. Interestingly, that will had to do with death (what no human being would want). Hezekiah decided to exercise his privilege of asking God for what he (Hezekiah) wanted. God granted him his heart desire and we all know the end of his story. Jesus Christ, on the other hand, decided to let God have His way, and we all know the end of His story too.
Whose example would you want to follow: Hezekiah’s or Jesus’? What would you prefer: your will or God’s will? As for me, not my will oh Lord, but your absolute will be done in my life!

EIGHT YEARS OF GOD’S FAITHFULNESS!
“O LORD, I will always sing of your constant love; I will proclaim your faithfulness forever” (Psalm 89:1 TEV).
Today marks the eight-year anniversary of my Internet ministry - a ministry that started with sending of a devotional message by email to about 50 people on February 18, 2003. (You can find that first message below.) The ministry has been growing everyday from that one aspect to many aspects of the Internet (visit http://www.thewordthruthenet.org/abouttheministry.php to know more about the ministry). Only God knows the number of people throughout the world that are being blessed by the ministry through the Internet every day. Indeed, great is His faithfulness and I will always proclaim it forever.
I cannot but appreciate all the people that God is using to support the ministry financially, materially, morally, prayerfully and spiritually.
Let me specifically appreciate people that supported my project of visiting a foreign country for ministry-related purpose last year. I do not have a particular project for this year, but I need more REGULAR FINANCIAL SUPPORT to be able to do the ministry more effectively, most especially the SMS aspect of the ministry.
My ministry-related trips to Ghana and Mozambique last year were eye-opener to me. I discovered that I cannot be ministering to people throughout the world and remain a local champion who is not exposed to what is happening in other places apart from Nigeria. So, it is my desire to have more exposure through ministry-related visits to other countries, especially in attending international conferences, seminars, workshops and similar gatherings.

"The land we passed through and explored is exceedingly good…. And do not be afraid of the people of the land, because we will swallow them up. Their protection is gone, but the LORD is with us. Do not be afraid of them" (Numbers 14:7, 9, NIV).
These were the views of two groups that went to explore the land of Canaan. Undoubtedly, the two groups were saying the absolute things about what they saw in the land. The former is the carnal sight that did not see beyond the ordinary, while the latter is the spiritual sight that saw the extraordinary.
What do see in your situation? Is it the ordinary or the extraordinary? If you see only your situation, you are seeing only the ordinary, but if you believe, you will see beyond the situation. Jesus told Martha, "Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?" (John 11:40, NIV). And Paul testified, "We know these things are true by believing, not by seeing [the ordinary]" (2 Corinthians 5:7, TLB).
See beyond the ordinary by believing in the Lord that He will help you, and He will be glorified in your life.

LOVE LIFTED ME!
“You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:6-8 NIV).
Apparently, the composer of the popular hymn, “Love Lifted Me,” James Rowe, based the lyrics of the hymn on the incident found in Matthew 14:22-32 when Jesus Christ, out of love, lifted Peter who was sinking in the sea as he was walking on the sea towards Jesus Christ. However, a closer look at the lyrics of the hymn will make one to discover a deeper meaning based on Romans 5:6-8. Because of the sin of Adam, mankind was made sinners and condemned before God (Romans 5:16-19). Even, for people that do not believe in the doctrine of the original sin, men were, and are still, sinking in their own sins. Some of them have tried many means to do away with sins and pacify God, but none of their own efforts can reconcile them back to God. It was at this point that God demonstrated His love for the mankind and sent His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, to die for us and save us from the penalty of sin.
Apart from the sea of sin that all mankind has been sunk, many people are deep in the sea of difficulties of life. They have tried all their possible best with little or no success. God is waiting for such people to call unto Him to lift them with His love. He declared, “Call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you will honour me” (Psalm 50:15 NIV). “When nothing else could help, Love lifted me!”
Just as Jesus physically stretched out His hand to lift sinking Peter out of the sea, so also today He is stretching out His hands in love to lift anyone who can call on Him and be rescued from any peril, especially the penalty of sin. This Valentine season, utilize this divine love of Christ. Call unto Him and let Him lavish His love on you. “Souls in danger look above, Jesus completely saves, He will lift you by His love, out of the angry waves.” Likewise, who can you lift up in love this Valentine season?

“If anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire” (Revelation 20:15 NIV).
“Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb's book of life” (Revelation 21:27 NIV).
For three weeks recently, eligible voters in Nigeria went out to register for the oncoming general elections in the country. Most of them had difficulties to do so as there were initial logistic problems. One funny aspect of the difficulties was the inability of the direct data capture (DCC) machines to recognize the fingers of some of the would-be electorates. This made the authorities of the electoral body of the nation to emphasize it that for one to be duly registered, all the ten fingers of one’s hands must be recognized and captured by the machine. This has to be done and one has to get a voter’s card. The registration exercise has come and gone. To be able to vote later in the year in Nigeria, the question that one would ask is, “Have you been duly registered?” Undoubtedly, anyone who is not duly registered cannot find his/her name on the voters’ register and such a person will not be able to vote or be voted for.
There is another register that is above all registers on earth and even in heaven. This unique register is called the Book of Life. This is a heavenly book in which the names of the righteous that have been redeemed or saved are written. The redemption or salvation referred to here is the one through Jesus Christ (John 1:12; 14:6; Acts 4:10-12). Only people that are duly registered in this book will be allowed to enter heaven, and anyone whose name is not in the book will be eternally separated from God. There is no difficulty whatsoever in registering one’s name in this unique heavenly register. The Bible says, “If you confess that Jesus is Lord and believe that God raised him from death, you will be saved. HAVE YOU BEEN DULY REGISTERED?
“If anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire” (Revelation 20:15 NIV).
“Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb's book of life” (Revelation 21:27 NIV).
For three weeks recently, eligible voters in Nigeria went out to register for the oncoming general elections in the country. Most of them had difficulties to do so as there were initial logistic problems. One funny aspect of the difficulties was the inability of the direct data capture (DCC) machines to recognize the fingers of some of the would-be electorates. This made the authorities of the electoral body of the nation to emphasize it that for one to be duly registered, all the ten fingers of one’s hands must be recognized and captured by the machine. This has to be done and one has to get a voter’s card. The registration exercise has come and gone. To be able to vote later in the year in Nigeria, the question that one would ask is, “Have you been duly registered?” Undoubtedly, anyone who is not duly registered cannot find his/her name on the voters’ register and such a person will not be able to vote or be voted for.
There is another register that is above all registers on earth and even in heaven. This unique register is called the Book of Life. This is a heavenly book in which the names of the righteous that have been redeemed or saved are written. The redemption or salvation referred to here is the one through Jesus Christ (John 1:12; 14:6; Acts 4:10-12). Only people that are duly registered in this book will be allowed to enter heaven, and anyone whose name is not in the book will be eternally separated from God. There is no difficulty whatsoever in registering one’s name in this unique heavenly register. The Bible says, “If you confess that Jesus is Lord and believe that God raised him from death, you will be saved. For it is by our faith that we are put right with God; it is by our confession that we are saved” (Romans 10:9-10 TEV).
